Non-trad, building resume for PhD - does intake/service manager role at a clinic help?
2023.05.29 07:32 commonTravel Non-trad, building resume for PhD - does intake/service manager role at a clinic help?
Some quick background - I'm from the US and my major was computer science - I graduated in 2017 with a 3.9 GPA. I then moved to Japan to work as software engineer -> engineering manager for 5 years before quitting last year and pivoting to this field. I'm doing what I can here for now before moving back home to do a postbacc in psychology then hopefully a doctorate. My current research interest (I think, not much experience obviously) is in process research for evidence-based therapy.
I'm currently a part-time research assistant at a neuroscience lab and crisis hotline volunteer here. Trying to switch to a lab that's actually clinical psychology though because I'm not actually interested in the research topic at this lab which is about face recognition and the visual system. I also spend some time every day reading research in the field - it's pretty fun!
I've asked some clinics in the area for shadowing opportunities, but it seems they only take current students and don't allow shadows to "respect client privacy." I haven't exhausted all the clinics though so I could keep trying. There are, however, open roles for part-time "service manager"/"intake coordinator" roles where I would be doing intake, connecting clients with therapists, and also doing front-desk work like running up receipts and taking calls, etc. Oh, and "cleaning the therapy rooms." Although it doesn't sound amazing, I'd be happy to do it if it could help my candidacy.
Would be happy to hear any advice and recommendations for how to best proceed. Thanks!

- National Hispanic Recognition award (College Board)
- Lots of local debate awards, and some national level stuff (TOC Bid, NSDA Nationals qualifier, State quarterfinalist and top speaker award, top 25 at a lesser known national championship)

Essays/LORs/Other: Optionally, guess how strong these are and include any other relevant information or circumstances.
I expect LOR's to be good, I am pretty close to a few of my teachers, who have a good understanding of me as a person and my achievements. My guidance counselor one will be cookie cutter, since I don't know them that well.
I have basically the whole summer to work on essays, I plan on investing a lot of time in it to put out quality work as I think it could make a huge difference considering I don't have any mindblowing achievements.
Schools: List of colleges, ED/EA/RD, etc All the ivy leagues, UChicago, Duke, Emory, NYU, Notre Dame, Northwestern, StanfordState schools: UF , UCF (top 10% class rank auto admit; basically my safety), FSU
Not sure whether I should ed to Dartmouth, Duke, UPenn Wharton, or if I should REA to Yale. Want to apply early to one of those to maximize my shot at getting in, and those four are my top choices.
Any advice at all and chances are much appreciated.

2023.05.29 07:19 olmaciej Hi OC! We’re relocating in a few weeks and need some input to help our apartment search.
I’ve never been to California so this is getting stressful. We’ve kind of gauged out areas that we want to be in (based on responses yall gave me about Disney fireworks- didn’t expect to get so much input on that lol thank you all). But now we’re having some analysis paralysis regarding apartments and we’ve got some major constraints so this is extra stressful. Need to figure this out ASAP. Would appreciate any insight advice recommendations etc.
We’re looking at a budget top of 3200-3400. Hoping for 2 bed 2 bath. Biggest constraint is that SO is a manual wheelchair user so we need accessibility. Doesn’t need to be ADA but does need: 1. Either ground floor without a lot of stairs- or a consistently working elevator. 2. Bigger bathrooms (none of that single toilet room stuff) 3. Normal or wideish doorways 4. Carpet sucks to wheel around on.
We’ve got two dogs (one is 60 lbs but not service unfortunately)
I’m also terrified of roaches which I just realized is a thing (we’re from Colorado and they are apparently pretty uncommon here)
My job is in Irvine (hybrid) but SO is still interviewing at places so we don’t really know where we’ll end up but gonna at least start Irvine/south of Irvine (seems a little less bustling but again no clue). We’re quiet professionals who want a safe cozy place to be and maybe have some good lighting for plants (the non-drug houseplant kind)

2023.05.29 07:17 jedidaemin Had to kick out two families from the brewery I work at after someone got upset that his wife was told she couldn't change a diaper in the taproom.
So I work at a brewery taproom that also serves pizza, and I'm one of the shift leads (basically manager when the managers aren't around). We have a men's restroom, a women's restroom, and a family restroom that has a changing station. ( this is important later) About 30 minutes before we closed I noticed a coworker talking to a lady at one of our couches in our little lounge area that has several couches and a very small, low table. We also have a bunch of high top tables and booths around the taproom. It looked like the lady was changing an infants diaper ON THE COUCH. I have seen this happen here before, but not in about a year. Turns out she was indeed changing the baby's diaper on the couch, and my server was telling her she couldn't do that. The lady had basically finished already so there wasn't anything we could do. Once she had finished we cleaned the couch with disinfectant and isopropyl alcohol. Moments later, what we are assuming is the woman's husband, comes BEHIND THE BAR, with said infant in his arms, to interrogate my coworker about why she was being so rude and unprofessional and what the issue was. The situation quickly devolved into him telling us we did not take the situation into consideration, that the family bathroom was occupied, and that we wouldn't understand because we don't have kids ourselves (and yes he asked). He disregarded anything we said, basically ignoring us, while continuing to just talk at us about how awful we were. He just kept going on about it and wouldnt stop. My coworker was in the process of taking off her gloves that she was wearing while cleaning the couch, and turned to throw them in the trash that was behind the bar. This man did not like that and said "don't turn away from me, come back here." At this point my coworker removed herself from the situation, told him she had enough and if he didn't like it then he could leave, and walked off. This was when I stepped in and told him, again, that he needed to leave. Multiple times I told him during all of this that under no circumstances was it acceptable to change a diaper in the taproom, seeing as how it's not only disgusting, but also a health code violation. No matter what I said he continued to ignore me and keep talking about how he did nothing wrong, and "was respectful and never raised his voice." (His words.) Nothing that we said mattered to him, and all he wanted was to assert himself as being right and us as the bad guys. The first (first!) time I told him to leave he got all upset and was aghast that I told him to go. He responded with "oh you're kicking me out? So I'm not paying for anything then?" I told him three more times to leave after that. I was on the edge of telling him I would be calling the police for trespassing if he did not leave. At this point he asked me if I was a manager, and I was in the process of reaching for my mobile POS handheld to comp his bill just to get him to go away. When I turned to the side to reach for it he said "oh now you're also turning away from me while im talking? Get back here." I told him his check was comped and his group needed to leave. He finally stopped complaining about how unprofessional we were, walked away, and gave a very chipper "thanks for the hospitality!" On his way out he even handed another server a $20 for her good service. Jokes on you, we tip share! All of this because he didn't like that we told his wife she couldn't change a diaper in the taproom. The sheer audacity and frail ego this man had was simply mind blowing. This capped off a night of shitty parents letting their children run around screaming, jump on the booths, and even one family who asked if their children could come behind the kitchen line. Please just go away and stop bringing children to breweries.

2023.05.29 07:08 LadyBirdGerhl Tips for cleaning a small room with a lot of stuff very quickly?
I’ll try to make this as short a possible. Last month I developed hives all over that have grown in intensity. I wasn’t sure if it was carpet beetles, laundry detergent, or some sudden allergy to pollen. I decided to do a deep clean in my room and replace my bed because I wasn’t sure what was causing it. My bed is one of of the fiberglass Zinus Green Tea foam mattresses that have a class action lawsuit against the company so it’s going out; I couldn’t find a lawyer that could deal with the case since they’re so far into negotiation talks for a settlement. Secondly, I’m disabled, both neurological (started less than a year after getting the Zinus bed, thought maybe it was a fiberglass issue but I’m not sure anymore) and brain disorders (since around 16). So, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, and more! Lol My point is, between both types of disabilities cleaning has really taken a back seat for the past, well…15-16 years, maybe? My bedroom is a wreak. I’ve been working on it for nearly a month and I still feel like I could have made more progress. I’ve got a new bed ordered and I’d like to bring it in as soon as it arrives (probably the beginning of this week). I’ve been on the couch since the beginning of the month and it’s been so uncomfortable. Waking up to the TV every day blaring (I have Hyperacusis, everyone else in the house is harder of hearing), and just generally the couch is uncomfortable and there’s very little privacy; I can’t go to bed when I want, I can’t lie down when I want, can’t sleep as long as I need, I’m exhausted. My room is 9x11 and holds 22 years of life, nearly 35 considering I brought stuff from when we moved. I have this tiny space to live, book shelves, twin bed, long dresser, chest of drawers, bedside table, and unattached headboard with built in shelf and space on top. My bed is on risers so I can’t move it freely. My furniture can’t be moved freely either, too heavy, not on rollers. Dust has built up for years. Various items are around. I already have about 30 bags of clothing in our living room and 15-18 in our basement for laundering. Left in my room is still at least 16 large storage bins with items in them, papers such as receipts from doctors visits and such, and 10 shoebox size storage bins most with various items, two rolling luggage pieces and the crossbody purses that go with them, as well as three instruments in their cases (guitar, viola, ukulele) and a couple stacks of books. I’m not sure what to do. Stuff is on every surface. There’s still stuff on the floor. I’ve been working at this nearly every day for 3-5 hours a day at least since the beginning of May. I’m on Zyrtec the past week to control the hives which makes me more tired, I’m just exhausted and I don’t know exactly where to go from here. There are no other rooms I can put this stuff in while I clean. My Dad is a hoarder. I don’t have extra money to hire anyone to help or rent anything to store items until things get situated. Can anyone offer any tips on how to clean within the confines of this small area? Maybe ways to organize a little even? I’ve tried looking at this from every angle and right now I just really need to make sure there’s enough space to remove my bed and box spring then bring in the new set. Once that’s done, I can clean a little more leisurely because my GOSH, I’ll actually be able to sleep as much as I need and get a good nights rest! Thank you in advance for your help, sorry for the long post.

As the island moves towards recovery, DPW crews continue to work removing debris throughout the island.
GWA Update:
As of 10 a.m., the Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) provided the following update on water restoration progress:
Northern Region:
Currently 50% of operable wells are on-line
Northern water system is operating normally
More wells are being restored to island power as GPA continues to restore circuits
GWA continues to operate all available wells to increase reservoir levels throughout the northern system
Tumon and Tamuning have water, but low pressures persist causing outages in some areas until reservoir levels can be increased
Central Region:
Connection to Navy-supplied sources at Santa Rita-Sumai and Nimitz Hill has been restored
With the exception of Finile and Santa Ana areas, service was restored to Santa Rita-Sumai and Hågat
Talo’fo’fo main village has been restored, with minor outages being reported as crews are assessing for any line breaks

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inalåhan
Malesso’ Pier
Hågat Mayor's Office
Chalan Palauan, Dededo
Sinifa, Santa Rita
Mount Santa Rosa, Yigo
Additional tank deployments pending for other sites once additional containers and chassis are made available. Once the tanks are depleted, they will be refilled and returned to service at locations still without water.
At this time, the water tanks listed above are accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Once the tanks are depleted, they will be refilled and returned to service at locations still without water. Residents island-wide who have water service are advised to conserve and limit use for cleaning, bathing, and cooking in order to conserve water to allow reservoir levels to increase.
As a precaution, water obtained from these designated locations must be boiled for at least three (3) minutes prior to consumption. A precautionary boil water notice remains in place due to possible bacterial contamination in the water that can occur when increased run-off enters a drinking water source following heavy rains.
Boil Water Notice Tips:
DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.
Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for three (3) minutes, and let it cool before using or use bottled water.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
For information, contact GWA’s 24/7 phone line at (671) 646-4211 or facebook.com/guamwaterworksauthority.
GTA Restoration Update:
GTA is actively working 24/7 on post-typhoon restoration. The core network is operational with stable off-island internet, but there are outages in wireless services in certain areas. Priority is given to larger sites serving residential and business customers. GTA is also prioritizing restoration to public safety and health facilities. However, the lack of island power and fuel shortages are causing some challenges for the restoration process.
To support customers, GTA is waiving disconnection fees and freezing disconnections until further notice.
Updated operating hours are Micronesia Mall (10AM-6PM) and GTA Support Center (7AM-7PM), while the GTA Experience Center and retail locations remain closed. For assistance, please contact the support center at 671-644-4482, visit
www.gta.net, or email
[email protected].
Docomo Pacific Restoration Update:
Docomo Pacific has been working with its technology crews to make island-wide assessments in Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota since Typhoon Mawar.
For Guam customers, the majority of cell sites did not suffer major damage due to Typhoon Mawar. The primary issue at this time is getting island power restored to the sites. Docomo Pacific is working closely with Guam Power Authority to restore services. Generators have been deployed at strategic sites to maximize coverage, and to ensure a stable power supply for as many mobile sites as possible.
The fiber network for southern villages supporting several mobile cell sites has sustained storm damage. This means that even if these sites were powered with a portable generator, there is no mobile service connectivity at this time. This is on the list of high priorities, along with restoration to public safety and health care facilities. No disconnections were announced until further notice, as well as no data caps for all mobile data customers and load-free prepaid service.
IT&E Restoration Update:
IT&E is working around the clock to restore services. Generators have been deployed to undamaged cell sites that can be accessed safely and that have connectivity to the network. Southern cell sites suffered significant damage from the typhoon. IT&E is unable to provide a timeline for restoration at this time, but is working to deploy a solution.
All prepaid subscribers get unlimited service, regardless of prepaid plan. Data caps have been lifted for all postpaid subscribers and tethering is available for all postpaid subscribers, free of charge. Service suspension due to nonpayment is postponed until further notice.
For the latest service updates, subscribers are encouraged to check IT&E’s official social media pages. Service-related issues can be reported by calling (671) 922-4483 or sending a direct message on official social media pages.

2023.05.29 06:00 AutoModerator Weekly Employment Question Thread
Welcome to the Weekly Employment Question Thread!
The intent of this thread is to allow a space for those whom wish to ask questions about joining, training, testing, disqualifications/qualifications and other questions that would otherwise be removed as per Rule 1. The answer to almost every question you can possibly ask will be 'It depends on the department'. Your first step is to look up the requirements for your department, state/province, and country.
As always, please attempt to resource information on your own first, prior to asking questions. We see many repeat questions on this sub that have been answered multiple times.
Frequently Asked Questions:
- I want to be a Firefighter, how do I get started: Each Country/State/Province/County/City/Department has different requirements. Some require you only to put in an application. Others require certifications prior to being hired. A good place to start is to research a department you wish to join, look up their website and check their requirements.
- Am I too old: Many departments, typically career municipal ones, have an age limit. Volunteer departments usually don't. Check each department's requirements.
- I'm in high school, What can I do: Does your local department have an explorer's program or post? If so, join up. Otherwise focus on your grades, get in shape and stay in shape, and most importantly: stay out of trouble.
- I got in trouble for [insert infraction here], what are my chances: Worse than someone who has a clean record, which is the vast majority of your competition. Depending on the severity, it may not be a factor. If it is a major crime (felonies), you're likely out of luck. You might be a really nice guy/gal, but departments don't like to make exceptions, especially if there's a long line of applicants that don't have any.
- What will increase my chances of getting hired: If there's a civil service exam, study for it! There are many guides online that will help you go over all those things you forgot such as basic math and reading. Some cities even give you a study guide. If it's a firefighter exam, study for it! For the CPAT (Physical Fitness Test), cardio is arguably the most important factor. If you're going to the gym for the first time during the hiring process, you're fighting an uphill battle. Get in shape and stay in shape. Most cities offer some sort of bonus to those who are veterans of the military.
- How do I prepare for an interview: Interviews can be one on one, or in front of a board/panel. There are many generic guides that exist to help one prepare for an interview, however here are a few good tips:
- Dress appropriately. Business casual at a minimum (Button down, tucked in long sleeve shirt with slacks and a belt, and dress shoes). Get a decent haircut and shave.
- Practice interview questions with a friend. You can't accurately predict the off the wall questions they will ask, but you can practice the ones you know they probably will, like why do you want to be a Firefighter, or why should we hire you?
- Scrub your social media. Gone are the days where people in charge aren't tech savvy. Don't have a perfect interview only for your chances of being hired gone to zero because your Facebook or Instagram has pictures of you getting blitzed. Set that stuff to private and leave it that way
Please upvote this post if you have a question. Upvoting this post will ensure it sticks around for a bit after it is removed as a Sticky, and will allow for greater-visibility of your question.
And lastly,
If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone who does submitted by

2023.05.29 05:39 grapeLion [Military] Sharing my experience doing social work
There is a lot if misinformation going around (still) about the military. Most of it is based off of "my friend, or I saw, or I heard, or I read on reddit previously". Here is my experience doing social work (Gongik) for my military service. I am a Korean-American born in USA but my dad was Korean when I was born. I am a dual-citizen. I pretended I didn't speak any Korean and just used English the whole time. Your language ability DOES NOT MATTER FOR THIS. Your office will find you something you can do, even if its something like helping foreigners or making and teaching English to people.
Before I start for Korean-Americans:
- If your Dad is Korean when you were born then you are Korean even if you didn't register or not. You can slip through the cracks if you come to Korea on a tourist visa. It's really up to chance of getting caught as a Korean-American coming into Korea on a non-Korean passport. That is why there are so many conflicting stories of "is it safe or not".
- Since 2018 the Law changed for Dual-Citizen + F4 visa holders. 1) Go serve or 2) get kicked out of Korea. If 1) you serve, you can retain your status. 2) If you decided to leave then you lose your status and can NEVER get it back except for tourist visas. You cannot even get a marriage one again because you are considered a "deserter". Also you are banned from entering until 38.
- If you are currently on a F4 and let it expire then you will not be able to renew it again. You have to keep renewing before it expires.
- There are still a lot of people slipping through the cracks.
Before you could of done "military extension" as an overseas Korean (2nd generation) and keep delaying it until 38 but you cannot do that anymore. Again the 2018 law change. Everyone got a notice about this.
From May 2022 you had to leave or serve. This is why many gyopos left Korea already because they didn't want to serve. Many think they can come back and work in Korea after 38 but they cannot. Only tourist visas.
Okay here's my experience:- I received the notice in 2018 when the law changed and got social work as my duty. Social work DOES NOT DEPEND ON AGE. It ONLY depends on your health condition or very special situations such as you are 36 years old when the law changed.- I took my health examination at the military office and received a score that made me go do social service (공익 = 사회복무요원, law changed its name to sound "better" to the public).
If you are drafted into it then your placement is RANDOM in the city you live in. If you are in Seoul, you can be put ANYWHERE in Seoul. Most of the time they will try to place you in your "-gu" that you live in. If you MOVE locations after your placement, you cannot be changed unless you move outside of the city. For example, if you are placed in Gangnam Senior Center then you cannot change your location unless you move to Anyang, etc. (I can elaborate more on this later if wanted).
If you volunteer then you can choose your placement through categories. You have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice and because of that, there is a waiting list for the easier jobs such as working at the Gucheong. Waiting lists can take 1-2 years.
Most placements will either be at 1) helping disabled people (this sucks), 2) helping elderly people (this sucks), 3) helping kids (this can be fun), 4) some random office work (this can be the best or can suck based off who you are with). In the end luck of the draw of who you work with.
5) You are set up at a COMPANY and you can get paid properly. 6) You are a researcher. (These 2 are not considered gongik and more of specialty work)
My daily schedule looked like this: (I will omit where I worked for privacy)
9am - 6pm was my working time. I had 12-1pm for my lunch break. Most of the time I was doing the work assigned to me. I was NOT allowed to use my phone at all. I was in a real shitty place where I ended up reporting to the Military Office for breaking a lot of "laws" regarding what gongik can and cannot do. The military office actually came and punished the place I was at for not following protocols and abusing us and now they cannot get anymore gongik anymore. I had to do shit like clean the bathroom (this was a grey area because its considered sanitizing a common space and not cleaning up the shit of someone in particular), carry heavy loads (office called out all the males to do this, the loads were up to 40kg BAGS), LITERALLY DID LINE FACTORY WORK MAKING SIGNS AND SHIT.
You can be lucky like some of my friends:
Gucheong work: 9-6pm, your "lunch" is from 12-2pm, you do NOTHING but just watch netflix on your phone or study for your exams, etc.
One thing: Working at the SUBWAY station is considered to be the best because there are 2 shifts: day and night. Day shift you just stay in the office doing nothing, sometimes you go out during rush hour to make sure that the crowds are moving (I'm sure you've seen them). Night shift = you literally sleep and just open the gates/turn on escalators and go home. The best part of this is: you get paid properly (like 2,000,000won a month) by the subway company. These are harder positions to get because its popular.
Payment:
The payment got updated in January this year. Your pay is based off your "grade" which increases every 6 months. You start off at "이병" then "일병, 상병, 병장". Your monthly pay is 600,000won, 600,000won, 800,000won, 1,000,000won. It will increase again in the next few years.
You also get paid a "stipend" for your daily transportation and food. You get 2,300won and 7,000won PER DAY that you show up to work. Which leads to an extra ~150,000won every month.
Holidays/Vacation/Medical:You get a total of 30 medical leaves during your 21 months (you need a doctor's note)
You get 15 days off your 12 months and 13 days your remaining months.
You can stack 4 days of your vacations at once but you must show up to work once a week. Also these must be approved by your location and so can be rejected because of being busy, etc.
Basic Training:Yes you go to a 3 week basic training. Everyone must go, even the researchers, company placed workers etc.
Punishments:
It depends on your location. My location punished you if you were 10 minutes late to work. (Punishments are very simple = you get extended time on your service, 5 days for EVERY punishment is the standard in the guidebook).
Part time work:Yes you can work part time while doing gongik. All you need is to fill a document out and you can work at night while doing your social work. This must be approved by your location though.
TLDR: Gongik is literally a waste of time and brain-dead work. You will feel like you are throwing away 2 years of your life. It can be super shit depending on where you get placed. Your age/language abilities do not matter. But I got to keep my dual-citizenship.
I will respond to questions when I can. If mods want "proof" of me finishing my gongik (finished this year) I can send proof of this. I will also edit later to fix formatting, readability, etc.

2023.05.29 05:32 sour-pantalone Help!
Hi all! I adopted a cat (1 year) about a month ago and everything is going great up until about 2 weeks ago when she started peeing on one spot of the carpet in the living room. I clean her litter box almost everyday- every other day so I know her litter is kept uptight but it’s just pee on the one spot. I took her to the vet and she doesn’t haven any UTI’s or anything wrong with her. I washed the carpet with carpet cleaner, baking soda, and even vinegar but now I feel like that smell won’t go away at all. Im unsure what to do. Mind you I live in an apartment so I can’t Chan he the carpet. If anyone could give any advice on how to get the lingering smell that would be great!

2023.05.29 05:29 HauntedSoybean Salesforce Administrator to Service Designer -possible path(s)
Hello! After a recent layoff from the tech world, I have lost my job as a Salesforce CRM Admin. I’m starting to rethink what I really love to do and came across the world of service design. Helping fine tune processes and studying human behavior has always been an interest.
I am technically trained in Cognitive Science/ Neuroscience and I did get a lot of experience designing reports and dashboards for users in my Salesforce role.
Just wondering how much of that I could use to cleanly transition into Service Design. I have some flexibility with time and money right now, so should should I spend those on a UX certificate (Google’s for example) or is that not related enough?
From the podcasts I’m consuming right now it sounds like many service designers are not officially trained in service design, and that’s ok. Do you agree?
If you were hiring, what kind of experience would you like to see from someone with my background?
Thank you 🙏

2023.05.29 04:21 Intel81994 Am I overreacting? Got 'scammed' by a fake mental health coach for ~7k
Am I crazy here for thinking this is very manipulative, predatory, and what this coach is doing is way out of line?
I needed help me with mental health and PTSD I have been having (later realized he is not a therapist and his PhD is unaccredited and from a spiritual school).
I feel scammed by this guy (not doxxing his name here).
Please let me know if I'm over reacting and if not, where I can get help for this to get my money back?
Selling what appears to be some quasi MLM - Realized all of his clients are coaches who also coach other coaches and a friend of his whom I checked with claimed that he was in fact coaching this guy for his mindset because his methods did not work and he needed help...)
My context: I was (and am) a in a very rough mental health place, I was the victim of a cyberhack that led to the theft of ~80K and messed me up beyond just the immense financial stress due to the computer intrusion. PTSD symptoms, flashbacks, etc.
Now unemployed currently, lost both of my jobs in Feb (had to get 2 jobs after the hack, worked like crazy to build some savings back up) and job market is rough right now, having tough time, panic attacks due to the pressure, while trying to apply to grad school.
The field I was working in is super new and now barely exists due to the recession and rates so I'm worried about getting another job in the field miraculously and getting cut again when recession gets worse (can't afford it) or having to pivot fields entirely again now. All of this is driving my mental health really really bad and some days I'm having serious trouble.
Anyway that's beside the point -
I suffered a serious mental health episode during his program (not blaming him for that), and I sought professional emergency help and medication.
This guy sold me 1:1 coaching - 12 sessions for $6800 (!) but I cancelled halfway through after 6 sessions because I became suspicious I had been scammed and clear terms of the contract were not delivered.
For example call recordings and some other resources were not given. Refund clause in his contract is void due to this as well. Contract says Slack access, many other things. He did do the 1 hour calls but that's it. And the quality was subpar.
I just don't think this was worth over $560 per call...
He was on vacation on some calls, I could not hear him. He talked about himself and other clients and talked down upon respected clinical therapies and said he has some method that works better but we never really got to it.. it was all generic stuff he kept hashing.
He was not selling therapy or saying he was a psychologist in his contract (his contract makes clear it's not therapy and only coaching)
BUT he did charge me the money before I signed the contract and that was not mentioned on the "sales call" -
He had me pay over messenger by just sending my card details and I also paid a deposit via the phone call (it was a sales call and he mentioned he needed to hire someone for sales calls instead of him doing it, ugh).
This has been extra shameful and hurtful given the hack now that I'm out several thousands on top of that hack....
My mental health is extremely bad some days and I'm having panic attacks. Job searching is very rough in this market especially in this state.
I let him know all of this via email and he ignored it all.
What’s important here is he didn’t deliver a lot of what was stated and used deceptive marketing to sell something egregiously priced to someone clearly vulnerable and then pretends like this is normal.
The issue here is: I partially thought he was also a licensed therapist... he has a PhD listed prominently on his LinkedIn and he has logos of all the brands he has worked with (I now think he made them up - he lists JNJ, NYU Stern, Nestle...).
I dug deeper and found out that his PhD is from an unaccredited spiritual 5013c university so it's NOT licensed/accredited and he is NOT a psychologist or therapist but only a life coach...
but the PhD is titled to sound scientific (Psychoneurology) and I believe he's doing it to seem more legit than he is.
I have since found a proper therapist who has a legitimate PhD and charges much less, with proper regulation and is MUCH better. I just feel so ashamed I fell for this and got scammed and don't know what to do. Been having serious mental health struggles and I trusted this guy and now really feel scammed.
Even services like Talkspace or Betterhelp are like $100 a session for actual legitimate psychologist and even psychiatrists...
He refunded me half when I cancelled (gave me $3300 back) but I still don't think that's fair - it still comes out ton over $560 per session...
I emailed him several times very politely to ask for an additional $1700-2000 back so that the 6 sessions we did he still gets paid out over $300 per session or $1800 total which IMO is MORE than fair, no?
Entire thing is icky and gross to take advantage of someone struggling with mental health.
Am I being crazy here?
He ignored my emails and proceeded to instead ridicule me on his social media - didn't mention my name but made it very clear it was about me - he told me to "man up", gaslit me into thinking it should be normal to pay 'high ticket' for this sort of experience.
Looking back it's clear he preys on people suffering mentally and who don't have the means to pay $6800
He told me several stories bragging almost about how he got someone scraping by to open a credit card to do his program.
I did a chargeback, he then shared my confidential mental health struggles with Amex in the dispute evidence - a creditor - which I find to be insane, if a regulated therapist did that they would lose their license.
I believe this sort of service he is selling and his behavior could cause harm to vulnerable individuals.
MY OPTIONS
Not sure what to do outside of reviewing him online.
Write to BBB? and FTC? (did both)
Write to the State AG (he is New Jersey)?
Write to Consumer Affairs of his state and Psych board tipping them off that he might be attempting to practice regulated therapy?
His contract has an arbitration clause (more predatory) but I am not going to travel from FL to NJ over $3300 nor is that worth suing over... also I don't think that's fair.
I believe he is doing coaching so he can do it unregulated unlike therapy (since his PhD is fake/unaccredited and he legally cannot call himself a therapist or psychologist but is basically doing that and charging far more than any would).
I don't know if coaches can attempt to treat PTSD and emotional distress, nothing wrong with life coaching, charge whatever the market is willing to pay for you, but don't do predatory marketing or lie about credentials/experience and then not deliver what's in the contract on top of that.
It's fine if some executive mindset coach with an actual client roster of CEOs charges 10k or even more for coaching, but for context I found this guy used to be a fitness trainer just a year back.
He never went to a real college. Not to toot my own horn but I went to a top university.
It's just a different league than the exec coach example. My therapist I have now has a PsyD. And still charges less and is super professional and great at what she does.
His only testimonials are all other coaches that coach other coaches to coach coaches, and I also believe the logos he lists are fake... found a few other of his clients and uncovered that some feel the same way and regret it. Taken advantage of and brainwashed.
Only after digging did I realize it was a fake unaccredited school. The entire thing is just so disgusting, feel taken advantage of, gaslit, gross.
Am I overreacting here or is my thinking correct that this is gone too far?

2023.05.29 04:09 AAkl Question about sewage odor in upstairs bathroom
Hello plumbing professionals. First off, thanks for all you do. I’ve called 2 reputable companies to diagnose an issue with a noxious sewage odor in the upstairs bathroom.
In November, we moved into our home in Connecticut. Brand new septic tank installed by a company that services the entire neighborhood.
In December, we lit a fire in the fireplace on the first floor after having the chimney cleaned. That’s when we first smelled the sewage in the upstair bathroom. I check for any dead animals in the attic or fan, nothing.
Did some research and learned that the negative pressure of air flowing up the chimney was pulling air from the plumbing pipes potentially causing the smell. Solution at the time was to open a window in the house to bring in fresh air. The defeated the purpose of using a fireplace but it helped lol.
Now that it’s warm outside, we’ve been running window fans. When they are exhausting air, we smell the sewage in the same bathroom. We cleaned the drain pipes with baking soda and boiling water, but still persists.
I was able to trace the smell in the wall behind the medicine cabinet which is right next to the toilet (first and second floor toilets are above on another). Laundry is also in basement right below.
The first plumber came and checked the PVC stack pipe in the basement and the vent pipe on the roof. No signs of water damage/leak nor a blocked vent. I mentioned to him that I installed our new toilets with a rubber seal instead of a wax seal. So he installed a new wax seal under the toilets and asked to call back if the smell persists.
2nd time he came out he said he’d need to remove the vanity and demo the drywall behind the toilet to see if he can find a leak or crack in the stack pipe. It would be $900 for the demo, but no guarantee we’d find the issue and we’d have to pay for any remediation following the demo. I told him I’d think about it and let him know.
So, before we demo the wall does anyone have any ideas? Would hyrdojet help? Could I cut a small hole in the drywall before gutting everything?
Thanks for reading this long post and appreciate any help.
