2023.06.10 01:57 Frank_Leroux Molossus, Chapter Nineteen
First Chapter Chapter Eighteen Chao peered at the holographic display at the front of the landing boat as she talked to an international audience. âOkay, folks! You can now see the Coalition Exploration Bureauâs ship
Exultant Finger of Rithro. Itâs missing its usual armor configuration; normally, this corvette would have triangular cones of armor at the front and back. But they re-configured that armor material into a shell to prevent us from seeing them as they flew towards Earth. Merely as a precaution; they flipped the shell around a few weeks ago to display their ship to us. They even extended their radiators towards our planet, which to them is a signal of surrender.â
She smiled at Parvati, who floated next to her. âPretty cool, right?â
âVery cool indeed!â exclaimed Parvati. âSo where is the damage?â
Chao pointed. âSee these toroidal tanks around the middle of the ship? They hold hydrogen for the shipâs fusion drive, but after tangling with that Breaker some of them got punctured. You can see the holes there, there, and there. That means theyâre now limited in how long they can burn the reactor. Plus the FTL drive is now pretty much kaput. It apparently uses a lot of energy.â
Parvati pondered the display. âFaster than light,â she mused. âWe need that. After we get the fusion drive technology, of course. Assuming that ever comes out of committee.â
Chao laughed. âWell, thatâs why weâre here, right? To show all of humanity what could be ours.â
âWill we go outside? I mean, for real outside?â The actress reached towards the display, halting when she realized there was no physical screen.
âWeâve got pressure suits. Should be okay, we did plan for going out for a few minutes to get some direct video. Itâll be limited in time, those suits arenât really meant for proper EVAsâŠâ
âOh, thatâs no problem!â said Takh from behind them, causing both women to do the equivalent of a zero-g jump. For someone so big, he somehow managed to justâŠarrive on the scene. âWeâve got plenty of components on board, we can make you all some proper hardsuits!â He grinned at the camera on Chaoâs chest; watching an udhyr grin was an awe-inspiring sight, what with all of the teeth and mandibles. âItâs all snap-together for any body type, it works just like your Legos!â
Parvati, of course, was the first to regain her composure. âThank you Takh, Iâm sure that will be very welcome. One thing has occurred to me; even if our material is successful in allowing you to patch your tanks, you will still require hydrogen to fill them, yes?â
The XOâs cheer didnât fade. âOf course. Weâll find a nearby ice-containing body and extract us some hydrogen. We already have a few candidates chosen. You can all come and ride along! It should be fun to watch.â
âYes, very fun.â Parvati met Chaoâs eyes in a clear unspoken message of
is this guy for real? A much smaller hand crept its way around Takhâs leather-armored shoulder. âNow, my dear,â said McCoy. âWe mustnât interrupt the PR people. Theyâre half the reason weâre out here, after all.â She winked at the two other women; both of the latter winked back.
âOh, of course!â Takh bowed formally to the two. âForgive me.â
âNo worries,â said Chao.
âThere is nothing to forgive, my good sir,â replied Parvati with an equally formal bow.
The huge alien and petite corporal vanished, leaving the two women to watch the ship as the boat headed for its docking cradle.
âThey are utterly adorable,â said Parvati.
âSo are you two,â said Chao.
âSorry?â
âYou and Ravindar. Iâm not saying to make your move right now. Weâre gonna be on camera for a while, and I know I just made a bunch of people on Earth go
squee. But you need to tell him how you feel.â
For once the actress looked flustered. âIâŠI couldnât, heâs so brave and strongâŠâ
Chaoâs voice sounded out like the slamming of a vault door. âStop. I had the same problem. I was into someone who was brave and strong. Not as big as Ravindar, but then again few people are. Then I found out he was into me too, but because he thought I was smart. Iâm not as smart as he thinks I am, but Iâm not going to tell him that.â
Parvati glanced into the rear of the landing boat, where Martinez was in the midst of puttering around with the human and alien crew. The actress now looked thoughtful. âI see.â
âAll Iâm saying is, you donât need to be exactly in-sync in terms of what you see in each other.â Chao smiled. âHeck, you might even find out that youâre in-sync in ways you didnât see coming.â
The dark-haired Indian fixed Chao with a stare. âI sense there is a story somewhere in there that youâre not telling me. Ah well, as you say it can wait until we are all no longer under the cameraâs gaze.â
__________
Master Sergeant Wilkes smiled down at the spidery alien. âKifa, thereâs someone Iâd like you to meet. Consider it part of your helping us to train. This person made a living while driving one of the highest, fastest aircraft weâve ever made.â
âOooh!â Kifa looked very pleased at the idea. âThatâs a good area to focus on! Where orbital mechanics and aircraft mechanics meet.â
âIndeed.â Wilkes nodded at the near door. âYou may come in, sir.â
A man walked in, his face stretched taut in the way which only scar tissue can appear.
Kifa peered up at him. âForgive me, this is probably very insensitive, butâŠwere you injured?â
He laughed. âI sure was! Burned to a fare-thee-well!â
âOh, I am so sorry!â
He smiled. âNo need to be sorry. Hey, do you want a headpat? Word on the street is your species like that sort of thing.â
The xyrax rocked back and forth on its legs. âWell, a human headpat is always welcomeâŠ.â
The man reached up and wiggled his fingers, making a great show that his pinky had full range of motion. âSee this? Pure miracle that I can do that. The surgeon putting my hand back together, just on a whim, decided to put a pin in here soâs that my pinky finger can grasp properly. Good thing too, otherwise I wouldâve never made it through the physical training.â
He then reached forth and with that rebuilt hand dispensed quite a few righteous headpats onto Kifa. After a mutual moment of happy bonding, the xyrax spoke again.
âWhat training were you pursuing?â
âThe same thing you and I are gonna be doing for a week or so.â His eyes, narrowed with scar tissue, lit up. âMy dear Kifa, Iâm gonna make you into a Sled Driver. God willing and the creek donât rise, we might get to do it for real and not just in the simulators. Theyâre already pulling a bunch of Blackbirds out of mothballs. Hell, even the Russians are offering us titanium for building new ones. Seems like everybodyâs got a fire lit under their kiester.â
Kifaâs eyes, already big and black, got even bigger. âWhat is a Sled Driver?â
âWhy, itâs only the best profession on the planet, my little blue-furred friend. We get to
go fast.â
__________
Joachim regarded the cylindrical, human-sized tank with some trepidation. It looked far too much like a transparent coffin. âYou want to stick me in that thing?â
Zawahir nodded. âI know itâs a lot to ask, sir. It is entirely up to you, in the end. But if this worksâŠâ He waved at the tank. âIf this works, then you will emerge from that tank physically in your twenties.â
They both regarded the tank for a moment, which was full of a clear and, at the moment, a very
exclusive liquid.
âCorina too, of course,â said Joachim as he leaned back in his wheelchair. âIf it works on me first.â He still wasnât quite sure where he was; there had been a lot of back-and-forth with planes and whatnot.
âOf course,â said Zawahir. âThat goes without saying.â
âThen the two people injured in the DC attack. This will regrow their limbs, correct?â
âWell, naturally.â Zawahir smirked. âTheyâre the Borlaug Instituteâs big publicity stunt, after all. Testing on two people before-hand should be enough to let us know if itâll work on them.â
âOf course.â Joachim gazed at the tank. âIâll do it, on one condition.â
âName it.â
âIfâŠif I donât come out okay, I want everyone to know that I tried, right? And I do mean everyone. All of humanity.â
âIâm just one person. At the moment, I can only promise that Iâll say what I can.â
After a moment, Joachim nodded. âThen put me in there. I just need to talk to Corina beforehand.â
âOf course, sir.â
__________
The blue-suited woman with a blonde pony-tail smiled as she stared into the camera. âWelcome to Summit Technologiesâs livestream of Point-Counterpoint, Iâm Amy Coulson. We are currently talking about and debating the latest announcements in space-based systems. As everyone is aware, this has become a source of great concern in the last month or so.â She nodded to the beige-suited man next to her. âThis is Walter Higgins, formerly of TRW and who now works for Northrop-Grumman. Walter, to start with can you tell us what the current status is of the repair effort for the alien craft?â
Walt leaned forward, putting his forearms on the desk in front of them. âWell, the main concern is if the plates weâre providing for patching will actually work. So only one of the
Rithroâs boats was launchedâŠthe one with Chao Me Chu and Parvati Devdhar, theyâre towing the fifteen-ton loft provided by ULA to avoid wasting too much energy. Just in case the patching doesnât work.â He winked at the camera. âI assure you, as someone in the aerospace industry, ULA is going to be very proud of that for a good long while. Anyways, at the moment, they are approaching the L5 point and we should be able to get some spectacular pictures of, well, everything. Of the Earth from near the Moonâs orbit, of the Moon itself, and most importantly of the
Rithro.â
Amy nodded in a comradely fashion, but Walt was not fooled. Heâd dealt with reporters before. âSounds intriguing, and Iâm sure everyone on Earth looks forward to such sights. But mere patching will not be enough to solve the shipâs issues, correct?â
He sighed. âYouâre right. One of the shipâs fusion engines was damaged, and that limits their top speed. Think of it asâŠyouâre a big ocean liner with three propellers, and one goes down. You might still be able to steer using just the other two, but youâre not going to be as effective or fast as you might be.â
âEffective,â she mused. âI suppose that our helping fix their fusion drive is among those bits of alien tech currently prohibited?â
âYes. I have heard some rumors that the Borlaug Institute in Iceland has had some great initial success, so I hope that soon we will be able to tackle the fusion drive problem.â
She stared at him a bit, which he knew was a bit of theatricality. âSuch a repair would make them more capable against these so-called âBreakersâ, correct?â
âSo-called? Now, Amy. Donât tell me youâre agreeing with those lunatics?â
In the weeks since the simultaneous attacks, a few manifestos had cropped up online. All mostly spouted the same nonsense; at least, nonsense in Waltâs eyes. They all said the same thing; that the Breakers were fake. That this whole rigamarole was a false flag effort by the Coalition, one intended to get all of humanity under their thumb.
âI donât agree with them,â said Amy, to her credit. âIâm merely stating the other side of the conflict. Yes, I think most people agree that there is an alien ship up at the L5 point which has been grievously damaged. I do trust the evidence of my eyes. Iâm sure our twoâŠâ
âFive.â
ââŠfive brave souls heading out to that very point at L5 will see exactly the same thing as the Hubble did. But. Have you considered, just for the sake of argument, that evidence of an attack is not evidence of Breakers? Perhaps this is some local dispute, and the crew has set up some sort of fake attack. They could intend to use us as shock troops to settle it.â
Walt leaned back in his chair as he went through the longest twenty seconds of his life. He knew things, thanks to his role. He also knew that if he spoke them aloud he would be burning his entire career right down to the waterline. âThat is somewhat possible. But not probable.â
She leaned forward, as if sensing she had him on the ropes. âWhy?â
âBecause they didnât need to.â His gray eyes were calm as he stared at her and measured his words. âDo you have any notion, any single clue, of the firepower that ship possesses?â
âUmâŠwell, no, that partâs still classified.â
âI will give you a hint. They have a spinal railgun that could, with around three shots, turn any metropolitan area on earth into a molten crater. They have nuclear-tipped missiles, even one of which could burn a city to the ground. They didnât need to play nice,
Amy. Those aliens could have stood off in orbit, smacked a few cities, and then gotten on the radio to dictate terms of our surrender. Weâd have no choice but to comply.â
He stared daggers at her, half expecting some black-suited guys with earpieces to jump in and haul him away. But nothing happened, it was as if the world was holding its breath. âThey did their very best to treat with us fairly, to treat us as equals.â
Amy looked away. âIâŠI hope that is true.â
âIt is.â He glanced behind his shoulder for any Men In Black, but nobody was there so far. Maybe he should continue. He assumed a smile, one which he did not feel. âAnyways. We will see what they see, when they get there. There is, also, the international consortiumâs proposal for the Sea Dragon.â
The reporter rallied, clearly grateful for the change in subject. âAh, yes. Youâve reviewed the designs of this craft. Is it really necessary?â
âAt the moment, yes. Starship holds a great deal of promise, but theyâre still trying to crack the reusability and multiple-refueling issue. This design does permit reusabilityâŠof the first stage, if nothing elseâŠbut it isnât strictly necessary for success. Success, in this case, consists of tons to orbit.â
âWhy something so big, though? Wonât it be an issue?â
He chuckled, feeling surer of himself. âThatâs why weâre launching it in the ocean, in the middle of nowhere.â
She actually looked troubled, so he figured heâd throw her a bone. âThe first launch wonât have anythingâŠcontroversial.â
âBut Walt, the second launch is the issue! Nobody has launched this much radioactive material into space.â
âWe need to, Amy,â
âBut on an almost untested rocket? From a design which is decades old?â
âWe have top people on it,â said Walt. âIncluding people from that era, who know exactly the pitfalls and also have access to modern technology.â
âWhich people?â
âItâs still secret as to their identities. But like I said, I can confirm rumors that the Borlaug Institute is already paying significant dividends.â
Amy rolled her eyes. âOver a billion dollars funneled into a figurative black hole in Iceland. Why would you believe anything they say?â
âTheyâre going to have some serious proof soon,â said Walt.
__________
Iceland. Joachim had never, ever expected to visit Iceland. But yet here he wasâŠagain. He stood with no cane, with nothing supporting him but his own two legs. He stared at a nearby volcanic massif, one covered with green lichen. The spring was coming in, and the ground around him was similarly strewn with fuzzy green growth. His beard and hair were now coming in dark again, with only a hint of gray at the tips to betray his true age.
He heard some light-footed steps coming up the trail behind him. It must be Zawahir.
âWhy the hell am I back in Iceland?â Joachim replied.
"This is where the tech is, at least for the moment. How are you feeling, sir?â
âI feelâŠlike my old self, Zawahir. I forgot what it was like to have knees that donât hurt anymore. How is Corinaâs, er, âtankingâ proceeding?â
âVery well, sir. I am overseeing the procedure of her âtankingâ myself, I just wanted to come and let you know that everything is looking good.â
Joachim looked down at the back of his hand. It was no longer wrinkled, no longer showed a welter of age spots. âWhen?â
âShe should be out inâŠseventy-two hours. Thatâs how long it took you.â
âGood to know.â He turned to face Zawahir. âMy friend, I am going to need every single internet connection you have for the next seventy-two hours. I have a lot of design work to take care of in that time frame; I will need to have a lot of meetings using those oh-so-clever âonlineâ apps. Iâll be indisposed after that.â
âSir?â
Joachim stepped forth and placed a newly-strong hand on Zawahirâs shoulder. âMy dear Zawahir. I am now physically twenty again. In the next three days my wife, the love of my life and she who I hold dear above all else, will also emerge from your magic alien goo and she will also be physically twenty years old. What do you think will happen after she is thus reborn?â
Zawahirâs eyes widened. âOh. OH! Yes, of course. Please, follow me.â
Joachim chuckled to himself as he followed the man towards the low-roofed buildings of the Borlaug Institute in the distance.
__________
Chao was now clad back in her pressure suit; fortunately, the aliens were quite adept at helping the humans back into their cloth-and-glass cocoons. She looked over at Parvati. âNeil can bite us.â
Parvati grinned. âFor sure. Neil was a very great man, but sadly he never got to see an alien starship.â
Chao checked the readout at her wrist, ensuring that she was indeed sealed up and pressurized. She looked over at her four fellow humans, and received nods in return. âWeâre go, Captain Sadaf.â
The on-board crew of the
Rithro were now back in their chromed, faceted hardsuits. âDepressurizing,â said Sadaf. âPlease monitor those to either side, sing out if you see any stress.â
Chao reminded herself to breathe normally as things just gotâŠquiet. Very quiet. She managed, through sheer willpower, to not have an utter panic attack as she realized that there was nothing between her and a life-sucking
nothing except for a few layers of fabric and plastic.
She glanced over at Parvati, who looked to be also in the midst of trying (and fortunately succeeding) at combating her own panic attack behind her Plexiglas helmet. âDoing okay?â asked Chao, and immediately felt like an idiot for asking such a stupid question.
Still, Parvati nodded. Chao felt a tap at her shoulder, and looked over at Martinez. The corporal grinned at her from behind his own transparent head-cocoon. âDoing okay?â he asked with just the right bit of cheekiness.
Chao slapped his shoulder, but it was a playful slap. âDipshit.â She forgot, in the moment, that she was begin transmitted live to the world. Her curse was thus broadcast to pretty much every kid on the planet, who then gleefully repeated her curse-word until they all got smacked by their parents.
She didnât know that at the time, her entire world was the airlock door that now opened to revealâŠblack.
Utter black.
Chao had enough experience in zero-g maneuvering to push herself towards the door. âOh. Man. Folks, this is it. Gonna step outside, for at least a little bit.â
She could feel both Martinez on one side and Sadaf on the other. The latter figured; the captain struck Chao as a âlead from the frontâ type.
âGrip the frame,â said Sadaf. Through the translator bead her voice was deadly calm. âNo big muscle movements, just kind ofâŠdrift where you want to go.â
Chao obediently swung herself up and out of the boat, reveling in the fact that now she was seeing the
Exultant Finger of Rithro in real time. The long ship stretched alongside a clamshell-like shield, its radiators stretched out towards the Earth in a gesture of surrender.
Speaking of whichâŠ
Chao kept a firm hold on the doorframe as she looked behind her. A small, fragile, blue-and-white marble floated before her, a sphere which looked to be the size of her thumb-tip held at armâs length. Chao did so with her free gloved hand, watching her thumb occlude that fragile-loooking sphere. And in that moment, her world was completely changed.
It is one thing to know a fact. It is one thing to meet aliens, to accept that they are from oh so very far away, that your world is but one little dust mote drifting in the vast and limitless cosmic ocean. But it is quite another to see that fact laid bare before you, where you can witness it in real-time through nothing but a Pexiglas helmet. Chao now knew. Everyone sheâd ever known, everyone sheâd ever heard of, every king or warlord or emperor or internet celebrity who anyone had ever heard of had lived down there, upon a sphere that looked to her like the most ephemeral of soap-bubbles. She had the crazy notion that she could just reach out one gloved finger and pop it.
She also knew that millions, perhaps billions, were watching this live via her bodycam. Perhaps they were going through the same epiphany.
Her breath caught in her throat, and she knew she was on the verge of tears. No, that was a bad thing. She was in freefall; there was no way for those tears to stream down her face. They would just collect over her eyes and blind her. So Chao breathed in deep and managed to tamp down those threatened tears.
âChao?â called out Sadaf through her comm. âAre you all right?â
âIâm good, Captain. JustâŠnext timeâŠ, we send up a poet.â
__________
Shaw hated, hated, hated having to use a wheelchair to get around. Most of the time he could wheel himself around using his substantial arms, but every so often the nursing staff would try to get oh so helpful and try to push him towards where he was going. Several of them had nearly lost limbs of their own thanks to such efforts.
Still, he was alive and that was a good thing. AlthoughâŠwatching Agent Milton Vila and his family, who were nearby as he went through his own convalescence, made Shaw reevaluate his life choices. It would be nice to have a wife and kid to hug while one went through the worst thing ever. But he was too old, such things were well behind him. While on autopilot, Shaw wheeled himself down the tiled and very off-white hallway with a sour air. One which told the entire staff that he was Not To Be Disturbed. He was thinking of a particular girl, one with the cutest pigtails and the sunniest smile. Yeah, she would have been the one, if heâd had his head on straight back then.
And then, in spite of his âFuck the Fuck Off energyâ, someone did block his path.
He stared at a pair of narrow legs, clad in narrow pants, then looked up with a distinct lack of humor. âI do believe you are in my way.â
The dark-skinned man blocking his path smiled, but it was a gentle smile. âI am. But, I am very sure you will want to hear my offer. Both you and Agent Vila.â
Shaw regarded him with gimlet eyes. âOh, really? Whatâs your name?â
âIâm Zawahir Ibn Harith. I am the head of theâŠâ
âI donât give a single solitary fuck,â said Shaw. âIâve had plenty of people trying to get me to tell them my life story since I got my leg removed with extreme prejudice. I donât know how you got in here, but you strike me as someone just like them, Harith. So. I may be minus one leg, but I can still fuck you up but good. I can fuck you up so bad youâll never shit right again. Do you wanna get out of my way now?â
The manâs smile didnât change. âBorlaug Institute.â
âWhat. Really?â
âReally, sir. Both you and Agent Milton Vila. It soundsâŠvery cynical, but you were the two that we wanted to heal first. As an object lesson to humanity. Do you understand?â
The notion made Shawâs mind reel. âHeal?â
âFully. We have successfully restored two people to the prime of life, and we are now certain that we can do the same for you and Agent Vila. With all of your limbs intact. We have done a great many tissue-sample experiments, and it appears that the regeneration also re-grows limbs.â
Shaw looked down at his missing lower leg. âAnd youâll do the same for Milton?â
âOf course, sir.â
âStop calling me sir, I work for a living. Call me Mack.â
âVery wellâŠMack. I wonât lie to you, this has been planned well in advance. But it turned out that limb re-growth for humans also unlocked certain regeneration within our cells, particularly the telomeresâŠâ
Shaw held up a meaty hand. âJustâŠIâm a dumb grunt in such matters, donât bother to tell me how it works. So you have some kind of magic goo that you slather over me and hey presto Iâm twenty again?â
âThat is more or less the shape of it, siâŠMack. You will need to be immersed in the âmagic gooâ for at least three days. Perhaps more, since this will also be regenerating a limb.â
âEither way, I go first,â said Shaw, with a flinty glare up at Zawahir. âIâm the test subject, and you need to test me good after I get re-birthed from your goop. I know you said youâd done it on two people, but we need to make sure this doesnât give me some kind of bullshit super-cancer before Milton goes in. Heâs got a wife and a kid. If he has to use a prosthetic instead of magic alien goo, then he has to use that instead. Understand?â
Zawahir gave Shaw a little bow. âOf course. I do believe you are quite the appropriate test subject.â
âOh, go fuck yourself. Where is this shindig taking place, anyway?â

2023.06.09 23:32 river_running Thanks for the advance notice.
I knew they were delayed and there was always a chance but at first they said they would have 30 days notice if your reservation would be impacted. Guess they changed that to 7 days. And of course now the reservation site is overloaded and I canât get any alternate dates to go through. Thankfully when they first said there were potential delays I booked a hotel in Gardiner, but I really had wanted to stay in the park. submitted by river_running to yellowstone [link] [comments]

2023.06.09 22:37 JoshAsdvgi The Sacred Origin of Smoking
The Sacred Origin of Smoking Smoking is, of course, originally an American custom, and with the Indians of North America possesses a sacred origin. "Of the sacred origin of tobacco the Indian has no doubt, although scarcely two tribes exactly agree in the details of the way in which the invaluable boon was conferred on man. In substance, however, the legend is the same with all. Ages ago, at the time when spirits considered the world yet good enough for their occasional residence, a very great and powerful spirit lay down by the side of his fire to sleep in the forest. While so lying, his arch-enemy came that way, and thought it would be a good chance for mischief; so, gently approaching the sleeper, he rolled him over toward the fire, till his head rested among the glowing embers, and his hair was set ablaze. The roaring of the fire in his ears roused the good spirit, and, leaping to his feet, he rushed in a fright through the forest, and as he did so the wind caught his singed hair as it flew off, and, carrying it away, sowed it broadcast over the earth, into which it sank and took root, and grew up tobacco. "If anything exceeds the savage's belief in tobacco, it is that which attaches to his pipe. In life it is his dearest companion, and in death is inseparable; for whatever else may be forgotten at his funeral obsequies, his pipe is laid in the grave with him to solace him on his journey to the 'happy hunting-ground.' ' The first pipe' is among the most sacred of their traditions; as well it may be, when it is sincerely believed that no other than the Great Spirit himself was the original smoker. "Many years ago the Great Spirit called all his people together, and, standing on the precipice of the Red Pipe-stone Rock, he broke a piece from the wall, and, kneading it in his hands, made a huge pipe, which he smoked over them, and to the north, south, east, and west. He told them that this stone was red, that it was their flesh, that of it they might make their pipes of peace; but it belonged equally to all; and the war-club and the scalping-knife must not be raised on this ground. And he smoked his pipe and talked to them till the last whiff, and then his head disappeared in a cloud; and immediately the whole surface of the rock for several miles was melted and glazed. Two great ovens were opened beneath, and two women (guardian spirits of the place) entered them in a blaze of fire; and they are heard there yet, and answer to the invocation of the priests, or medicine-men, who consult them on their visits to this sacred place. "The 'sacred place' here mentioned is the site of the world-renowned 'Pipe-stone Quarry.' From this place has the North American Indian ever obtained material for his pipe, and from no other spot. Catlin asserts that in every tribe he has visited (numbering about forty, and extending over thousands of miles of country) the pipes have all been made of this red pipe-stone. Clarke, the great American traveller, relates that in his intercourse with many tribes who as yet had had but little intercourse with the whites he learned that almost every adult had made the pilgrimage to the sacred rock and drawn from thence his pipe-stone. So peculiar is this 'quarry' that Catlin has been at the pains to describe it very fully and graphically, and from his account the following is taken: "'Our approach to it was from the east, and the ascent, for the distance of fifty miles, over a continued succession of slopes and terraces, almost imperceptibly rising one above another, that seemed to lift us to a great height. There is not a tree or bush to be seen from the highest summit of the ridge, though the eye may range east and west, almost to a boundless extent, over a surface covered with a short grass, that is green at one's feet, and about him, but changing to blue in distance, like nothing but the blue and vastness of the ocean. "'On the very top of this mound or ridge we found the far-famed quarry or fountain of the Red Pipe, which is truly an anomaly in nature. The principal and most striking feature of this place is a perpendicular wall of close-grained, compact quartz, of twenty-five and thirty feet in elevation, running nearly north and south, with its face to the west, exhibiting a front of nearly two miles in length, when it disappears at both ends, by running under the prairie, which becomes there a little more elevated, and probably covers it for many miles, both to the north and south. The depression of the brow of the ridge at this place has been caused by the wash of a little stream, produced by several springs at the top, a little back from the wall, which has gradually carried away the superincumbent earth, and having bared the wall for the distance of two miles, is now left to glide for some distance over a perfectly level surface of quartz rock; and then to leap from the top of the wall into a deep basin below, and thence seek its course to the Missouri, forming the extreme source of a noted and powerful tributary, called the "Big Sioux." "'At the base of this wall there is a level prairie, of half a mile in width, running parallel to it, in any, and in all parts of which, the Indians procure the red stone for their pipes, by digging through the soil and several slaty layers of the red stone to the depth of four or five feet. From the very numerous marks of ancient and modern diggings or excavations, it would appear that this place has been for many centuries resorted to for the red stone; and from the great number of graves and remains of ancient fortifications in the vicinity, it would seem, as well as from their actual traditions, that the Indian tribes have long held this place in high superstitious estimation; and also that it has been the resort of different tribes, who have made their regular pilgrimages here to renew their pipes.' "As far as may be gathered from the various and slightly conflicting accounts of Indian smoking observances, it would seem that to every tribe, or, if it be an extensive one, to every detachment of a tribe, belongs a potent instrument known as 'medicine pipe-stem.' It is nothing more than a tobacco-pipe, splendidly adorned with savage trappings, yet it is regarded as a sacred thing to be used only on the most solemn occasions, or in the transaction of such important business as among us could only be concluded by the sanction of a Cabinet Council, and affixing the royal signature." submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments]
2023.06.09 21:49 in_jenneral Everything you think you know about Canada is wrong, and Destination Canada is here to prove it.
TL;DR: Canada is awesome. Hereâs a list of things to do there. Canada. Itâs a frozen tundra. All they eat is poutine. Theyâre nice but kinda boring. Weâve heard it all, and weâre happy to admit some rumours are trueâexcept the boring part. Any time of year, thereâs so much to discover, from food to incredible landscapes, to cool events. So if youâre open, allow us to recommend a few of our favourite things across the country that are perfect for a fall trip. https://preview.redd.it/tb5fjipdq15b1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca3744767addae68ec4068ddf14a965b9afa834a Sure, itâs poutine and maple syrup. Except when itâs lobster rolls, made fresh from the dayâs catch and served with a side of epic ocean views off the rugged coast of Nova Scotia. Or when itâs Bannock tacos, made with the delicious traditional flatbread of Indigenous communities across Canada, and enjoyed in a moment of true community. You get the idea. Check out the best restaurants in Canadaâs major cities https://preview.redd.it/sg9mg01gq15b1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=657fe2f316409a41095a46f9fe0a7c4991f88942 Yes â if by âsameâ you mean âwildly different.â Take fall, for example. In Newfoundland, fall means watching pods of humpback whales as they make their migration south. In Ontario and Quebec, it means gazing over vast panoramas of kaleidoscopic colour as the trees put on their final show of the season. And in the Yukon, it means opening yourself up to the bigger questions of the universe, as you watch the first neon ribbon of the northern lights unfurl across the night sky. Just so weâre all on the âsameâ page. See the most beautiful places to enjoy fall in Canada https://preview.redd.it/fept0xbiq15b1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adbc5e0b8775c9641d7fe9acc8bf28bc1ca8b821 Itâs true. Once youâre back in bed after stomping your heart out at Nova Scotiaâs Celtic Colours Festival, or concert-hopping through Quebecâs Mont Sutton Fall Festival, or roaming the music, film and dance installations of Nuit Blanche Toronto that fill the streets from sunset to sunrise â it can be very, very quiet. Find fall events and festivals in Canada you wonât want to miss Hereâs one indisputable truth about Canada: Openness permeates everything we do â from our wide open spaces, to our open hearts, to our openness for new ideas and perspectives. So if you think you know Canada, but are open to hearing more, let us surprise you. submitted by in_jenneral to u/in_jenneral [link] [comments]

2023.06.09 20:53 LifeCracker Mark Your Calendars: A Disney Springs Restaurant is Offering a SPECIAL New Experience
2023.06.09 20:23 TripleNerdScore1 Trip Report: Tokyo Kyoto Osaka Hakone (30s couple, traveling while visibly trans)
Hi everyone! This sub was so incredibly helpful to me in the planning process - I was deeply grateful for everything I learned, so I thought I'd post a trip report now that we're back!
About us: We're a 30s couple from the Midwest US. We're pretty experienced travelers (South America, UK/Ireland, Europe, lots of places in the US), but this was our first visit to Asia and first visit to Japan. As travelers, we love getting out on foot, local food/drink (especially street food), live music, nerd shit, weird art/vending machines. Also, my partner is a cis guy, but I am a trans masc person who is visibly trans (post-op in a few ways, but not passing/not stealth).
Dates: May 13 - May 29
What we did: Tokyo Kyoto Osaka Hakone Back to Tokyo
Tips and tricks: - Definitely get your walking training in ahead of time! We walked 10 miles a day on the trip. We're pretty avid backcountry camping/hiking fans who regularly put in 8 - 10 miles on the trail (not to mention taking our dog for multiple walks a day in the neighborhood), so I figured we'd be good - but it was A LOT, especially since you're also trying to translate and navigate at the same time. Japan is not generally a super accessible place from a disability perspective; benches and public seating areas are not common. I found myself wishing I'd packed a collapsible seat of some kind, tbh!
- Good shoes a must! Merrell Moabs are my go-to for hiking, but for this trip I went with Nike Dunk 6 high-tops, which rocked. My partner went with Onitsukas and didn't do as well - he wound up buying inserts partway through the trip, which helped.
- Work on a little Japanese ahead of time! We came in with about a dozen words/phrases, which was honestly truly helpful. So many people are so kind and thoughtful anyway, but it was an appreciated gesture that we had planned ahead and were trying our best. Google Translate's camera feature (Google Lens) was a life-saver for translating written words on signs!
- We had a great experience with Ubigi for an eSIM. The days of purchasing an actual SIM card or even a burner device (like we used to do when backpacking in Europe) are long past. We hooked up our Ubigi eSIMs beforehand, flipped the switch when we got there, and we were golden. Just in case, we'd set up our Verizon coverage to include a Pay-As-You-Go international plan, but we didn't end up using it. We also didn't use half as much data as we thought we would - we both came home with extra GB on our Ubigi plan still. We didn't do a PocketWifi and I don't think we needed it - Ubigi did most of the heavy lifting, and free WiFi at various places did the rest.
- Fly into Haneda, not Narita - way closer to Tokyo city center.
- Get your Suica right away at the airport - our beloved Suica got us through so many things! We also withdrew some cash and split it up between us - we withdrew a few more times on the trip and it worked like a charm. (Just make sure it's an international ATM that includes your card type - not all of them do. Also, notify your bank you'll be traveling, so your card doesn't throw a flag!) We used our credit card as well - the Chase card was accepted pretty much all places CCs are, but many places remain cash-only, especially bars and restaurants.
- Had a great experience using the Friendly Limousine Airport Bus service straight from Haneda to our hotel area.
- I booked shinkansen tix ahead of time, so I got nice discounts on weekday Green Car tix for two - but I really needn't have worried, there were plenty of seats available day-of.
- Don't bother with shinkansen for Kyoto to Osaka - we wound up just hopping on a local with our Suicas and it was fine.
- Don't bother with the Romancecar from Hakone back to Tokyo - it's fastemaybe a nicer seating experience, but just hopping on a local with your Suica is an order of magnitude cheaper.
- Look things up in Japanese if using Google Translate; use Tabelog for restaurants if possible. Google Maps in English is more touristy reviews/reactions.
- Tokyo Skytree was hit-or-miss - only real letdown of the trip.
- Tokyo teamLab PLANETS was completely worth it - absolutely worth the hype in my opinion.
- Queer and trans travelers - I felt completely safe, but as a plus-size trans masc nonbinary queerdo, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I didn't feel in danger, but I was absolutely aware that I did not fit in. Stares were common, especially from older men and young kids. (Weirdly, local women seemed more friendly and curious about me!) Just be prepared for it and remember you're not in any danger physically - it's all just curiosity.
- I have to thank this subreddit for recommending Hakone, especially for the tip to book a ryokan with private onsen access. We had an absolutely beautiful experience at Yamanochaya in Hakone, which included both a private "onsen" soaking tub in our room and private 1:1 access to a larger, actual hot spring onsen on the property. I otherwise would not have been able to experience a real hot spring onsen at all, as they are gender-segregated. Thank you, /JapanTravel!

2023.06.09 20:02 Morgellons-Live "Superfoods" article by Aajonus Vonderplanitz
"Superfoods
For Vegetarians And Vegans Or Who?
I have heard so much about superfoods and their benefits. What's your experience and what do you think about them?
Are there such things as superfoods? Gogi berries, cocoa beans, nibs and powder, noni juice and powder, maca root powder, acai berries and powder, hemp seed powder, camu camu berries and powder, green-tea extract, blue mangosteen, cod liver and fish oils, green powders and pills made from green grasses and their juices and algae such as spirulina, and chlorella are all claimed as raw superfoods by many people in the raw-food movements. I found that it is mainly within the vegetarian and vegan raw-food groups that people seek superfoods. It is helpful to understand why they must have superfoods.
Consider that humans have acidic and short digestive tracts producing acidic digestive fluids and harboring acidic bacteria, and 80% of teeth are designed for cutting, extremely similar to carnivores. Herbivores have mainly alkaline and very long digestive tracts producing vast amounts of alkaline- digestive juices and bacteria, and all teeth are molars for grinding vegetation. Rarely are there healthy long-term raw vegetarians and vegans. Usually, the more committed ones hit a wall at 7 years. Others that cheat may spend a decade or two before they hit the wall. Often, the wall is serious disease such as cancer. Half of my cancer patients were long-term vegetarians and vegans.
Ninety-nine percent of human vegetarians and vegans cannot get enough protein and fats, and lack minerals and an array of nutrients from their diets. Ninety-nine percent of their bodies are unfulfilled and unsatisfied. I know from 6 years of subjective and objective experience as a raw "balanced-diet- eating vegetarian evolved to vegan." I and ALL of the vegetarians and vegans I knew were usually malnourished with eating disorders. I adhered to it 99.9% of the time. Others were much less tenacious. However, occasionally, uncontrollably yet consciously, I stretched and contorted what foods were truly raw, trying to force reality to conform to my adopted concepts of vegetarianism and veganism.
I did not realize the irrationality of believing that humans were optimally healthy as raw-food vegetarians and vegans. I had accepted the false information that our digestive tracts were more alkaline like other primates, and herbivores. I was so malnourished, anytime anyone told me about a superfood such as amaranth "grain of Egyptian gods", I consumed it. However, all such promises of superfoods resulted in my slow but steady deterioration to 96 pounds at 5'8".
Primal-Diet-eating athlete Scott Wheeler of Australia for example won the race at the Raw Games in Hawaii November 2008. All of the other runners were vegetarians or vegans, some mostly raw and some not.
Ninety percent or more of all of currently purported superfoods are processed and not truly raw. They are not fresh so they lack enzymes. Whenever foods are dried, bioactive enzymes are inactivated like a dead auto battery. They cannot be resurrected any more than we can resurrect ourselves from dead. Therefore, even dried fruits are not really raw because they lack bioactive enzymes.
Although Native North American Indians lacked our laboratory sciences, they knew the inferior nature of dried food. They had empirical science called experience. Empirical awareness and knowledge is much more valuable, containing wisdom rather than conclusions based on chemical theories and hypotheses.
Each summer, Native Americans made large supplies of a mixture of dried meat and fat, sometimes adding berries. It is called pemmican. It would be eaten in case they could not find fresh kill. Eating pemmican would prevent starvation, fatigue and bodily deterioration. The process of making pemmican was time-consuming, both hunting and preparing it by drying, beating it until it became flour, soaking it in the sun with warmed fat, drying it in the sun and sitting near it and occasionally pressing it into 90 pound dried hard blocks. By spring, if they did not consume it, they buried it because they knew it would not be optimum for their health.
Let's take a look at the processes that so-called superfoods undergo to see if they are truly raw. Noni juice is chemically or heat processed to prevent fermentation in bottles. The chemical process utilizes kerosene derivative or alcohol. Both are natural but toxic. All "superfoods" that are powdered must be thoroughly dried so they do not cake and stick in the machines while being ground. When hard foods such as cocoa beans and roots are ground into flour, the machines reach a temperature of at least 176° F (80° C), cauterizing the foods.
Cauterization seals the food and makes it harder. It is therefore harder to liquefy and takes more time to digest in the digestive tract. Also, any metallic minerals in the foods will be released by the heat and be more toxic. Claims that such foods are 100% raw and have more antioxidants are false, after drying and cauterizing/cooking. They have the opposite effect in varying degrees.
Whole leaf grasses and fruits also have to be completely dried and hardened for powdering. Rarely are any grasses sun-dried. Usually, they are kiln-dried at temperatures above 118° F (48° C) and up to 138° F(59° C). They are also subjected to the same friction-heat from machines during the powdering processes that reach at least 176° F (80° C). They are not raw because all enzymes are destroyed and the food is cauterized/cooked. Also, we are not herbivores that can properly digest vegetable matter, especially when dried. The only exception is chlorella; I have experimented and found it to be somewhat beneficial. Commercial liquid green teas are all steeped in boiling water.
Sometimes, kerosene derivatives, distilled alcohol or other chemicals are sprayed on those foods to breakdown the oils and force them to dry faster. Since kerosene and alcohol are natural, they may legally call the product "All Natural." They know they mislead consumers and they do not care. Their interest is to supply products for abundant profits rather than produce quality products for which they obtain less profit.
The same is true of acai, camu camu, gogi, and noni. There are many beneficial claims about those foods so most people who consume them believe my analyses of those foods are wrong. However, consider that people feel better because most of those foods are high in carbohydrates and raise the blood and nerve sugar levels causing hyperactivity.
Raised blood and nerve sugar levels are not indications of health. In fact, they are indications of bodily harm. Columbia University found that we store 70-90% of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs), byproducts from spent high-carbohydrates, in our bodies for a lifetime. AGEs are cancer feeding byproducts that cause many ill effects, including arterial sclerosis by attaching to venous and arterial walls.
Also, infusions of powders cause increases in hormones such as adrenalin, also elevating energy levels but not to healthful benefits long-term. All endocrine glandular production is for emergency purposes only. For instance, adrenaline is for fight and/or flight. We are supposed to derive our energy from foods that supply fats, proteins with little carbohydrate, rich in enzymes and bacteria. If we were to eat proper raw foods rich in fats and proteins, and digest and assimilate them properly, most of us would have improved energy and stamina. After many years of eating a proper diet, we would develop tremendous energy and stamina. Like primitive Eskimos, we could live happily in the most strenuous climates and environments.
Cocoa beans (cacao), nibs and powder contain theobromine which is similar to caffeine and a nerve irritant. When cooked and/or processed, that neural irritant is a free radical. It often stimulates hormones such as adrenaline, testosterone and estrogen, making people think their new energy is healthful.
The only truly raw cocoa bean retains it moist skin and must be hand peeled. In small amounts it may be briefly ground in a coffee-bean grinder or blender without reaching high temperatures to retain its rawness and nutrition. I discussed the benefits of eating small amounts of raw cocoa beans in the earlier PD newsletter issue Vol. 7, Oct. 30, 2007. I have a correction to that. Cocoa beans do not contain the nerve stimulants/irritants caffeine or theophylline. They contain theobromine of the same family as caffeine and theophylline.
Fish and cod liver oils must have all proteins removed on which bacteria can feed, according to USFDA standards. That requires heat and/or chemical processes to separate and extract proteins. Two companies claim they produce their fish oils without heat or chemicals but they add processed oils as preservatives. Although that is a small amount, those preservative oils have been heat and chemically processed. How much fish oil is lost to the heated and processed preservative oils? How much of the fish oil will be contaminated by the processed preservative oils? We can glean an idea by the fact that they add enough to prevent the oil from being predigested by natural bacteria. If all of the oil is prevented from predigestion, how much will we not be able to digest? How much will the contaminated preservative oils contaminate us?
As a civilized race whose members eat processed and chemicalized-food, we require air-conditioning and heat in our homes and transportation to sustain us or we cannot work, play or eat. Our perspiration would reek. So many people I know who exercise reek of old stinky sauces, especially tomato sauces. They have a body odor like the outdoor garbage bin of fast-food Italian restaurants or pizza parlors on a hot summer day. That odor is from chemically produced flavorings and fragrances added to tomato sauces to make flavor and odor consistent. Civilized man is now the weakest organism on this planet.
"Superfood" is a misnomer. All lack enzymes and little can be digested and assimilated. Some contain nerve irritants and other chemicals that cause the body to produce hormones that flow through blood and nerves, elevating a sense of well-being without elevated true health. Therefore, the body's responses to "superfoods" indicate toxic responses. Calling any processed food superfood is the same as calling supplements magic bullets. However, if I were to judge any food as superfood, one would be honey that was unheated above 92° F (33° C). Another would be bone marrow from completely organically raised animals, fresh and raw in bones."

2023.06.09 19:18 Pydras 27 [M4F] BC/Canada/Online - Seeking someone to search the stars with
Maybe that title is a bit too cheesy, but I really do like exploring the night sky. Helps especially since my hometown was a great place to do so. That all aside, hello! I am Pydras, fat cat collector, lessor avatar of chaos, and most boring of all, corporate accountant. I am to find people to potentially connect with and see what develops. Whether that leads to friendship or something more will remain to be seen, but life is short so have to get out there and try!
A little more about me! As stated earlier, I am an operations accountant, based in interior BC. I am quite fond of cooking, and decent enough at it as well! I would say at least 67% of it would be tolerable to most people. Since my job is basically just sitting around all day, I try and workout at least three or four times a week to stay active and in shape. That being said I do have a sweet tooth that I am quite good at managing, except for my weakness of homemade baked goods. Art wise, I really have no skills in most of those areas except for writing (use to do some RP back in the day). Well, I do make quite the horrible MS Paint masterpiece if the inspiration hits, so that might count. Politically I am quite on the left side, and religion wise I tend to fall more into agnosticism and atheism.
For subject interests, my top three would probably have to be history, geography, and geology. One of my favourite things to do when bored is open Google maps and go to a random area and see what I can learn of those three for it. However, my absolute biggest interest and the one I hold closest to me is music. While I can't really play an instrument (have been trying to relearn piano), I usually have some sort of playlist on if I am not too busy or in a loud environment. I can literally go into paragraphs upon paragraphs about some of my favourite songs. Just about what I like about them, how they make me feel, etc. I am always up for sharing or creating playlists with someone, I truly feel like music is one of the better ways to get to know someone. My usual genres end up to alternative, indie, and math rock, but I will really just listen to anything that I like the sound of.
Hobby wise, it sort of depends on what time of the year it is. If the weather is nice in the spring or summer, I love to go for long walks and hiking. Just being out in nature beings a sense of relaxation and peace you can't get anywhere else. Plus, the views, just all the amazing views and secrets you can come upon. When the weather is not as pleasant or it is winter (so quite a few months here), I am usually found being a homebody. Probably no surprise, but gaming is a major filler of my time when I have nothing else to do. My main game right now is FFXIV, realized today that I have been playing it for over half a decade at this point, how time flies. I do enjoy the Paradox Interactive games as well, especially with all the amazing mods some of them have. Like music, I could spend hours talking about some of my favourite games. Would also love more people to play with, generally not picky about what, as long as you don't mind me potentially sucking. Gaming with people is always such a joy and fun time. I can be quite the reader if a particular book or series catches my attention. Once burned through a trilogy in a week since it captivated me so much. One of the dangers I found with me reading is I'll always go for one more chapter, then suddenly it is 3 am. Don't really have any specific genres in particular, though I am quite the sucker for some good worldbuilding.
I could probably keep rambling about myself, but why take away all the fun? As said before, I am looking for someone to see what kind of connection we can build. Location wise, for something more than friendship, you would likely have to be in Canada or have plans to move here. While I do enjoy all my friends in the US, I have no desire to move there unfortunately. Either way, if I intrigued your interests feel free to send me a DM and we can connect from there!

2023.06.09 18:29 octaviusbullconnor I feel like I am âfalling behindâ and I am getting worried and anxious about it.
Hello all,
As the title states, I am becoming very overwhelmed and anxious at the moment. I feel like I am âfalling behindâ due to a lack of internship and clinical experience.
For context, I am a rising junior in college majoring in Biological Sciences B.S. I am getting good grades (A/B student) with a 3.5 GPA after completing Orgo 1 and 2 (I anticipate these to be my hardest classes). 3.5 isnât great, but I am confident in my ability to bring it up to a 3.7 in my two remaining years with my remaining classes. I am currently a part of multiple clubs and organizations at my university.
I am doing great academically and in terms of extracurriculars at school, but I feel that I am very far behind in the realm of internships and experience. I am starting to become very anxious and worried about my future as I am starting late in the game. My freshman year, my family decided to move in May 2022 for my dadâs new job which caused me to not have an internship that summer. I decided to work a restaurant job and save the money for tuition and other school related expenses. At the beginning of my sophomore year, I fell to a really low point mentally due to family related events. This lasted up until mid February of this year, and due to a large workload from 17 credits, I wasnât able to secure an internship for this summer.
The past few weeks, I have looked on Glassdoor, Handshake, Google, and LinkedIn for any available internships, jobs, or volunteer opportunities that would look good for my resume. All have led to dead ends and I am starting to feel hopeless for this summer and that I am going to waste time.
I am enrolled for summer courses and I am thinking about working at the restaurant again to make money so that I am at least doing something to not waste time. For me, I am ahead on my credits and after this upcoming fall semester, I will be âconsideredâ a senior. I am going to try and get as far ahead as possible to free up my schedule to work an internship while I am at school. I am also currently looking for volunteer and clinical shadowing opportunities for this upcoming fall.
By the time I am applying for med school, I believe that I will have the GPA, the coursework, the volunteer hours, I am confident I will score good on the MCAT next spring, and extracurriculars, but I feel I will not get accepted to any good schools due to no actual intern experience. My absolute dream is to get accepted into UNC, but I am becoming more and more doubtful as time goes on.
I donât have anyone in my family or any family friends in the medical industry so I am on this by myself :/ I am out of the rut that I was in and I am ready to work hard and put my all in.
Any advice on what I should do, what I should look into, how I should approach things, and what my chances are looking like?
Thanks for your responses in advance!
