I love camping. I love the fresh air. I also think it's wonderful that we can buy compact camping stoves for cooking outside and that we only have to burn as much gas as we need to heat the food we eat. I think it's great that we can brighten up our campsite with solar or battery-powered lights and turn them off when it's time to sleep.
But for some reason, everyone I go camping with always wants to make a fire.
Campfires pollute. They release completely superfluous and excessive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. They make it impossible to enjoy the fresh air, which is one of the things people claim to like so much about camping. In fact, they ensure that the quality of the air I breathe in my campsite is significantly worse than whatever I'm breathing at home.
Yet for some reason, people think they still need these things when they go camping. I know people who will keep a campfire going all day at a campsite, even if they're not cooking, using it to keep warm, or using it for light -- during the summer! It's insane. They put so much effort into building this fundamentally destructive and harmful thing; it's totally silly.
According to the WHO, the smoke from outdoor cooking is responsible for over 4 million deaths worldwide each year. This happens, of course, because many people in developing countries have no choice but to cook over a wood burning fire every day. In the West, we make these fires and breathe the noxious smoke for recreation. The absurdity is off the charts.

I was curious how much closing the windows actually would help indoor air quality, since the air outside was so saturated. I figured eventually we would reach some kind of equilibrium and the indoor air would be as bad as the outdoor air. Luckily that was not the case. This is what I found out:
The first graph is an outdoor PM2.5 monitor, and the 2nd one is the monitor inside my house.

I was able to maintain decent air quality by closing the windows and running the furnace fan 24/7 to help try and filter the air. I do have a 4in MERV 12 filter in my furnace and my house is fairly tight, meaning I don't have much air leaking from the outside in through cracks in my house. Our ACH50 blower door test number was 1.5. So not SUPER tight but nowhere near a passive house
I did record a 13 minute video going into a lot more detail. If anyone wants more info on other air quality numbers like VOC's and CO2 levels, and more about the specifics of my house. Here is the video.

I’m not a horror fan at all because my mental state is very easily influenced by dark stuff, but my brain often makes up for it at night by giving me the freshest psychological horror that could be conjured. Usually it’s not movie quality since it’s so personal to me, but last night’s dream was so vivid and realistic I feel like it could at least make a short film.
It began in my old room at my parents’ house with me showing a friend some objects under my bed because I felt some were haunted. The ones closest to me were “safe” but the ones closer to the wall were untouchable because I knew they carried dark spirits. I was hoping she could help me “cleanse” the objects so my room would be safe again. While doing this, I mentioned that I sometimes feel a presence within the air vent under the bed. At that moment, we both looked towards the vent, and lo and behold, there was a pale white, blank face with huge beady eyes staring from around the corner within the shaft. It looked similar to that momo statue that circulated the Internet a bit, but it lacked the menacing smile and just had a blank expression.
We both immediately ran out of the room while the “thing” pulled off the vent grate and followed. We ran downstairs to my dad with the thing hot on our tails. The vent person watched as we frantically pointed it out to my dad, but he literally couldn’t see it. Another vent person suddenly crawled up from the vent in my dad’s office and we were chased out of the room again. We spent some time frantically running and hiding from these creatures while my dad tried to figure out what was going on.
In the dream, my parents had a home security system with cameras in the main areas of the house, even though they don’t in real life. My dad eventually came to me with his iPad to check the footage and prove there was nothing chasing us. When he pulled it up, the vent people appeared, but their appearance was completely distorted. Their heads were floating off their bodies and “glitching” like shitty 3D computer models while their bodies were distorted blobs that moved along under them.
At this point, I woke up full of adrenaline and still hyperventilating, which I always do when I have nightmares. It’s not a lot to work with but I think it would be a cool concept for a psychological thriller.
