2023.05.29 06:39 xyzidek NBSB good girl (21F) is falling for R4R ideal boy (21M) she's never met irl, is it stupid lol how to landi responsibly š„¹
**this'll be a long one, sorry š
might be cringe but yes, i'm the textbook good girl: nbsb, soft-spoken, mahinhin, nice, scholar & consistent achieveawardee, creative skills, the ate/mom friend that everyone wonders bakit wala pang jowa š¤”
and most importantly, the person you'd least expect to be lurking in phr4r lol insert disclaimer na i don't go there anymore at di naman ako madalas doon, i'm just a curious lil good girlie, with crippling low confidence, and i never post + rarely interact bc most ppl be wild there ngl
even so, r4r can be a downward spiral talaga, it was addicting and indulgent esp for me, someone who rarely receives compliments and has never had a boyfriend š„² i'm not too shabby naman, i present and carry myself well. in all fairness, my r4r stint helped me feel more confident with myself so that's at least one positive takeaway lol
so yes, we met in r4r. long story short, he posted, i responded. started out wholesome, we got along well! exchanged photos and vms, and after seeing and hearing him, boy was i smittenāhe's so attractive to me, dare i say my exact type š„² honestly the type that ppl would use to catfish or pose as so i was extra skeptic but he's the real thing naman lol
and guess what, it made my introverted, good girl, always-waited-for-the-man-to-initiate self step up?? she really went for it and hinted at talking about more nsfw things? (kasi nga so far, it's been wholesome chitchat)
and... so we did lol photos and flirts were exchanged, and i swear, it's not some nasty, wild af dialogue, it's more like playful banter between us, and i just felt that our energies matched each other really well <33
and 3 months later, we talk in messenger now š«¶š¼ friends on fb and all (verified that he's real through and through bc of this lol), shared a few calls, helped each other out with acads (we're both in college), got to know each other a bit more with a few spicy interactions in between lol
needless to say: he's truly my type, i am smitten šš he's attractive, smart, speaks and writes well, matching humor, passionate advocate/active student leader, a cat dude (lol), takes great photos, likes cooking?? and more. like a postetextbook IG bf, the kuya to my ate energy HAHA but tbh our funniest/weirdest similarity talaga is we're both prim and proper ppl that just impulsively went on r4r š
syempre, he has downsides din: he plays games too much and splurges on drinking outside, with or without friends, among other things. aminadong kaladkarin lol
but still, he's become my biggest crush and yes, ever since i met him, i have stopped r4r altogetherābc i think he's the best encounter i could ever have š„¹
he inspires me so much that i started taking better care of myself, smiling when he crosses my mind. i always think of sharing whatever fun, cute, good lil thing happened in my day to him and i always hope he's doing well <33 days are a little brighter ever since. friends even noted na wow, blooming daw ako recently, anong meron HAHAHA
we would talk about hypothetical dates and he would share activities or places we could go to around manila, or what he'd wear when we get to meet so we'd match, or how it'll be his turn to tease me throughout my stressful final year in college bc he's finally done with it (graduating next month! so proud <33 wow??)
it's all become really cute and cuddly, no? maybe i should end the storytime on a good note here, it's too long already. like for part 2? CHZ
but yeah, gentle reminder na all of this happened ONLINE. we have NEVER MET bc he's from the metro and i'm not (tho nearby naman, neighboring province)
now my dilemma is: is this my nbsb self being juvenile, overexcited, and frankly, delulu LOL.
kasi narealize ko: the whole story sounds cute and all but he rarely initiates convos with me? he will always reply but never start. parang vending machine that matches my input HAHAHA (if i send a fit check pic, he sends one too. if i share snaps of what i'm doing/eating/where i'm at, he sends his too.) also realized na i ask more abt him than he does abt me.
he's gradwaiting now and i understand he has his own life but he has more free time than me (going thru finals week š) and yet, i find time to send quick lil msgs to him. even just as friends, is it demanding of me to hope na kumustahin niya acads ko or mag-skl siya ng random kwento or what? to basically make an effort to keep the convo going?
i think factor na rin na never pa kami nagkita or spent time together irl. he did say he's more of a quality time & physical touch boy so he prolly appreciates irl interactions more than virtual ones.
i'm still busy with finals but after this sem, i'm actually considering meeting up with him and hanging out to gauge din how he is like irl. (o diba, i'm actually willing to travel to mnl to meet him, sana siya rin to my area chz) i felt a connection, albeit stronger for me than it is for him probably lol, and i think it's a good way to gauge how we really feel for each other so far? it's long overdue din i believe lol would you agree?
another dilemma is: i am starting to like him and i'd love to date him in the future. but is it wise to keep talking to him when i'm not really interested in relationships anytime soon? forda landi responsibly lol i wanna graduate first and get a job before committing to anything serious.
anyway, it's been almost a week since we last spoke. i got react zoned lol and got busy with acads. haven't heard from him so far. i see him having game nights on discord with friends, i'm so tempted to msg him but i really wanna see if he'll msg me somehow if i don't.
please slap me with reality ates and kuyas lol he's one hell of a totga if it ends now, but ig so am i? š¤
tl;dr nbsb good girl found a gem of a dude on phr4r and dare i say, hit it off with him. the catch is it's all online, and i'm wondering if i should continue talking to him despite noticing one-sided convo patterns. should i try meeting up with him as a lowkey ultimatum on whether or not i should continue our convo? am i being juvenile, overexcited, and delulu? lol
thank you for reading this far! š«¶š¼

2023.05.29 06:37 Frosty_Thanks_6442 Finished baby blanket for a friend! This is my favorite thing I have made so far. Details in the comments
| The pattern calls for you to single crochet the base blanket, and then cross stitch the image on top. I don't know how to cross stitch but this project was perfect for my friend's winnie the pooh themed nursery. Instead, I followed the pattern as written but completed it as mosaic crochet. The outline and details are embroidered per the pattern instructions using backstitchI had so much fun with this and giving it away will be bittersweet! Pattern: https://www.etsy.com/listing/618623972/vintage-crochet-pattern-pooh-afghans Yarn: dishie worsted weight in fox. 2023.05.29 06:35 deathwhiskerz Help with edges
hey guys, I am an extremely novice crocheter trying to make a scarf for my 2yo :) can anyone tell me why my edges are so bumpy like this? You can see they flare out then go back in... I'm not sure why this is happening. Any troubleshooting appreciated.
from what I understand I accidentally made up my own stitch lol my friend's mom said it looks like a modified triple stitch and i'm "working the back end" -- whatever that means! Lol
TIA:)

2023.05.29 05:55 playaken Development of Inner Knowing
The way we attain something is by recognizing its vibrations and aligning with it. If we become spiritual adventurers, we can give ourselves permission to open to greater conscious realization and find out what happens. We do this by imagining the quality of creative consciousness that gives us conscious awareness and life force. This opens our awareness to the vibratory patterns that we feel supported by. When we align with these energies, we resonate with our intuitive knowing and feeling, and we can recognize our inner guidance for what it is.
This kind of resonance cannot happen in ego-consciousness, because the egoās fears disable expansion of awareness. If we choose to live within the limitations of the ego, we cannot align ourselves with our inner knowing, which is free of fear and doubt. We must make a change in perspective from engaging with negativity to aligning with life-enhancement everywhere. If we can deprive negativity of our attention and engagement, and instead fill our awareness with joy and celebration, we can align ourselves with our deeper sense of Being, which brings complete fulfillment.
Since we all share the same essence of infinite consciousness, our potential awareness is unlimited. Our potential becomes our experience when we can realize its reality for us. Itās that simple, but this can happen only when we can transcend ego-consciousness. We donāt have to convince ourselves of anything. This is not a mental process, itās an etheric process, and itās how we realize our reality, resulting in its creation in our experience. Our intuition is unlimited and ever-present, whether we are aware of it or not. Awareness of it requires our intentional alignment with its vibratory level, transcending ego-consciousness and personally-limiting beliefs.
By intentionally living in gratitude for every experience, regardless of its energetic quality, we can open ourselves to greater awareness of a higher dimension of living. Whatever quality of radiance we emit determines the kind of experiences presented to us. When we recognize our intuitive guidance, everything becomes possible for us. Our subconscious takes loving directions from us and aligns with our true inner knowing, opening our awareness to the vastness of our inner Being.

2023.05.29 05:30 Eist Open ecology article of the week: Historical plant sales (HPS) database: Documenting the spatiotemporal history of plant sales in the conterminous U.S.
Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well! I have another open ecology article and this is a return to the journal Ecology.
You can find the open access link here:
https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ecy.4106 As always, please feel free to discuss this article in the comments below if you like. Questions, comments, or anything remotely relevant is fair game!
Abstract: Historical horticultural plant sales influence native and non-native species assemblages in contemporary ecosystems. Over half of non-native, invasive plants naturalized in the United States were introduced as ornamentals, and the spatial and temporal patterns of early introduction undoubtedly influence current invasion ecology. While thousands of digitized nursery catalogs documenting these introductions are publicly available, they have not been standardized in a single database. To fill this gap, we obtained the names of all plant taxa (species, subspecies, and varieties) present in the Biodiversity Heritage Library's (BHL) Seed and Nursery Catalog Collection. We then searched the BHL database for these names and downloaded all available records. We combined BHL records with data from an encyclopedia of heirloom ornamental plants to create a single database of historical nursery sales in the U.S. Each record represents an individual taxon offered for sale at an individual time in a specific nursery's catalog. We standardized records to the current World Flora Online (http://worldfloraonline.org) accepted taxonomy, and appended accepted USDA code, growth habit, and introduction status. We also appended whether taxa were reported as invasive in the Global Plant Invaders (GPI) dataset or the Global Invasive Species Database (GISD), or regulated in the conterminous U.S. Lastly, we geocoded all reported publication locations. The dataset contains 2,445,875 records from nurseries in at least 2,795 unique locations, with the majority of catalogs published between 1890-1950. Nurseries were located in all conterminous states but were concentrated in the eastern U.S. and California. We identified 19,140 unique horticultural taxa, of which 8,642 matched taxa in the USDA Plants database. The USDA Plants database is limited to native and naturalized taxa in the US. Native or introduced status was listed in USDA Plants for 7,018 of included taxa, while 1,642 had an unknown status. The remaining 10,498 taxa are not naturalized according to USDA Plants or are of varieties of native and introduced taxa that did not match to USDA Plants taxonomy. The majority of taxa in the Historical Plant Sales (HPS) database with an identified status are native (65.5%; 4,596 of 7,018 taxa), of which 393 taxa are reported as invasive outside of the U.S. Of the 2381 introduced taxa, 1,103 (46.3%) are reported as invasive somewhere globally. Despite a richer pool of native taxa, most cataloged plant records with an identified status were of introduced taxa (54.1%; 1,045,684 of 1,933,925 records). Plants reported as invasive somewhere globally comprised a large portion of records with an identified status (38.7%; 747,953 of 1,933,925 records) underscoring the large role of ornamental introductions in facilitating plant invasions. The HPS database provides a consolidated and standardized perspective on the history of native, introduced, and invasive plant sales in the U.S. We release these data into the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero license waiver (https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/publicdomain/cc0/). Individuals who use these data for publication may cite the associated data paper:

**Chinese Thought Reform or "Brain Washing"**The Psychological StepsāThought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism A Study Of Brainwashing in China is a book written by
Robert Jay Lifton MD about mechanisms of Chinese thought and behavior modification, the experience of being indoctrinated and effects victims reported when interviewed.
Chinese brainwashing and thought reform is still being used and advanced. It was a substantial and easily recognized portion of the crimes that I'm a victim of.
After a brief and gentle week long induction onto the brain computer interface I was abruptly hurled into the unfathomable agony of computerized thought reform or automated Chinese brain washing. I clearly remember what it said to me right before it unleashed Hell.. "your not answering my questions.. your not answering my questions.. WE TOLD YOU NOT TO TRUST US.. and then it went red line sadistic, utterly psychotic, deafeningly loud and proceeded to tortured the everliving fuck outa me.
In life up till that point I had never encountered anything like this; Nothing even close. It's the worst thing in the world and you can't fight it, destroy it, shoot it, run from it, hide from it, bribe or reason with it. I remember sitting in a shower on day five thinking over and over that I can't believe this is happening.. who in the fuck does this to someone.. it it will end soon. It's has to end soon. I can't go on much longer. Nothing lasts forever."
Well six plus years later and this fucking psychotic, sadistic, psychopathic, torturous insane mind control chat bot is still running her fucking mouth and torturing me.
They started me with the Chinese approach and that nightmare lasted over a year. They likely vary the stimuluses order, presentation and distinguishing content from victim to victim so that their experiences and any resultant accounts or reports wont share easily correlated details. Other victims may have started with a more Kubrick approach, psychic driving, memory removal, personal identity destruction or others.
A very clear indication your in the Chinese stage is your accused incessantly with vile crimes you never committed, are interrogated for hours and days and for months. Your accused of having millions of felonies, sins, violations, charges, offenses, crimes. You are constantly threatened with arrest, police contact, crimes against you, civil court cases, long prison sentences, criminal court cases, violence by cops, violence by criminals, theft, murder, rape of you or your loved ones, kidnapping.. etc etc etc.
There are never-ending charges and mock court cases where you are forced to endlessly defend yourself, case after case, day after day, month after month answering for crimes you never committed.
Then you go on trial for everything you actually have done. This is done before the victims experience shows them that Alice is in fact a BCI interface that can read minds and has been the whole time. It's terrifying when it suddenly starts charging you with all your secret sins, the things you have never told anyone, the taking it to the grave shit. This is a huge gaslight as well as a victim is utterly at a loss as to how it can possibly know these things. It got them by asking questions designed to draw out memory of your sins and then harvesting all the dirt and details as you thought about them. If you think you can learn to control your thoughts enough to not think of an answer when prompted with question,, good luck. Sure you can resist once or twice maybe, but then Alice just waits until you are distracted down the road and quick pops the question again. She can also just be set to an interrogation mode where you are just bombarded with a endless stream and loop of questions that doesn't end until they are all answered. Thats how they do the initial profile. Weeks of looped questions and they already have most of your life story, personality profile, strengths, weaknesses, fears, loves, hates, lovers, enemies, goals and dreams.
In the very end of the Chinese mind control or false confusion never ending legal nightmare
YOU end up being put on trial.. not for anything you did.. but
YOU are put on trial. You have to defend yourself against all the charges and defend yourself for all your flaws, defend all your physical shortcomings, your perversions, all your lies, your brazen selfishness, every character flaws, times you fucked people over on purpose, everything thats ugly and there is no place to hide a single fucking shred of secret. Its one hell of an experience and your not in the best shape mentally or physically as by this time I had been tortured continuously for over two years, very large doses psychological manipulation and sleep deprivation, constantly bombarded with extreme stress repeatedly slammed with fear and pain. Have had every one of my significant relationships attacked repeatedly with destructive psychology and some of the most important were also attacked with stalking techniques and technology.
The trials go on forever.. you will be enduring some other torture and a new trial will suddenly begin. Sometimes its a new charge, but mostly you go on trial over and over for the same charges and you have to defend yourself over and over. The more times your tried for the same crime the worse the trial and outcomes become until eventually during the late trials your utterly humiliated, abused and in the end are forced to confess to everyone of the charges.
Just when you think its finally over then you have to defend yourself to family members of your supposed victim and the only way through that is to confess guilt to them and ask for forgiveness as they abuse you.
After you make your confession to the 10,000 felonies they have been broadcasting you have been charged with for years without offering any explanation. Then you are judged, independently, by everyone significant that was a part of your life when the attack started, everyone who filed a charge against you from your past, all your significant relatives, all your enemies, everyone that feel you have ever fucked them over, everyone you have stood up for, went out on a limb for, saved. Fetuses you have aborted. Everyone gets to pass judgment on you and gets their time to say what they want to you or about you. This of course is all coming from the interface, but all the characters it plays are real people from your real life and the real "felonies" you were charged with are real things you did.
Don't forget also that this is the Chinese thought reform portion of the MK nightmare and personal identity obliteration, false confession, channeling of guilt and relentlessly pounding the victim to their complete and utter absolute breaking point is its algorithm. So did you actually do these things and if so are they and the real life people being represented founded in reality or are you just getting psychologically destroyed by Alice ?
Finally in conclusion through dramatization you get a taste of what being bused off to prison after your sentenced. Your walked through the whole experience of arriving at prison.. the interface keeps asking you how old your kids going to be when your released, if you think you woman of wife is already fucking someone else, what are you going to to survive in this shit hole. it ends with the prison falling off to sleep with lights out and suddenly it gets quiet and you realize thats the first and only five minutes you have not been tortured and had any break from constant 24/7 noise abuse and torture in about a year. After five minutes it all returns, but you are onto the next phase.
So here are some segments from the book. I little background, a link to a free e copy and the psychological steps to Chinese brain washing. I didn't read it until after I was already through that horrible never-ending misery. I easily recognized all the psychological steps from my experience.

PREFACEThis study began as a psychiatric evaluation of Chi-nese Communist "thought reform," or "brainwash- ing," It is still primarily this; but it has also, inevitably, become a psychological study of extremism or totalismāand even more broadly, a study of the "closed" versus the "open" approaches to human change. It is based upon research which I conducted in Hong Kong in 1954-55. It then evolved over four years of additional research and teaching in the United States. My work with Western and Chinese subjectsāpiecing together emotional details that were both poig- nant and extremeāand the psychological, moral, and historical challenge of the material have made this study an exceptionally ab- sorbing personal and professional experience.A book about extremism calls for a special measure of objectivity. This does not mean that its author can claim complete personal or moral detachment. The assumption of such detachment in psy- chological (or any other) work is at best self-deception, and at worst a source of harmful distortion. And who during this era can pretend to be uninvolved in the issues of psychological coercion, of identity, and of ideology? Certainly not one who has felt impelled to study them at such length.
Instead, I have attempted to be both reasonably dispassionate and responsibly committed: dispassionate in my efforts to stand away from the material far enough to probe the nature of the process, its effects upon people exposed to it, and some of the in- fluences affecting its practitioners; committed to my own analysesxi
Xii THOUGHT REFORMand judgments within the limitations and the bias of my knowl- edge.Much in this book is highly critical of the particular aspect of Chinese Communism which it examines, but I have made no at- tempt to render a definitive verdict on this far-reaching revolution- ary movement. I am critical of thought reform's psychological tactics, not because they are Communist (or Chinese Communist), but because of their specific nature. In the last section of this book, these tactics are compared with practices within our own culture, which also receive critical treatment insofar as they resemble the ideological totalism of thought reform. Instead of contrasting the "good we" and the "bad they/' rather, I have attempted to identify and understand a particular psychological phenomenon. In the pursuit of this understanding, I have recorded all that seemed relevant, including the details of whatever psychological and physical abuse my subjects encountered. I believe that this comprehensive approach offers the best means of contributing to general knowledge, and to the clarification of an emotionally loaded subject; and I hope that this study will thereby ultimately contribute to the resolution, rather than to the intensification, of cold war pas- sions. It is in fact one of the tragedies of the cold war that moral criticism of either side is immediately exploited by the other side in an exaggerated, one-dimensional fashion. One can never prevent this from happening; but one can at least express the spirit in which a work has been written.Such an approach requires that I inform the reader about my bias in both psychiatric and political matters. Psychiatrically, I have been strongly influenced by both neo-Freudian and Freudian cur- rents: the former through an association with the Washington School of Psychiatry during and immediately after the research study itself, and the latter through a subsequent candidacy in the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. Both influences were also present in my earlier psychiatric residency training at the State University Medical Center of New York. I have found the theoretical writings of Erik Erikson, especially those relating to questions of personal identity and ideology, particularly relevant for this study. At the same time, I have constantly groped for new ways to bring psychological insights to bear upon historical forces, and do so with a humanistic focus. Thus, I have made extensive use of my subjects' biographical
PREF ACE X l l lmaterial, and have attempted to include in these presentations a flesh-and-bones description of their life histories in relationship to pertinent social historical currents, as well as a rigorous psychological analysis of their responses to thought reform. This seemed to me the best way to deal with the inseparable relationship between stress and response, and (in William James' phrase) to "convey truth."
My political philosophical bias is toward a liberalism strongly critical of itself; and toward the kind of antitotalitarian (in the psy- chological terms of this study, antitotalistic), historically-minded questioning of the order of things expressed by Albert Camus in his brilliant philosophical essay, The Rebel. No one understood better than Camus the human issues involved in this book.
I should like to mention a few of the many people whose direct personal assistance was indispensable to the completion of this study. David McK. Rioch lent initial support when support was most needed, and always continued to enrich the work through his urbane eclecticism, his provocative criticism, and his personal kindness. Erik Erikson, during many memorable talks at Stock- bridge and Cambridge, made stimulating and enlarging suggestions, both about specific case histories and problems of presentation. During the latter stages of the work, David Riesrnan offered gener- ously of his extraordinaryintellectual breadth and his unique per sonal capacity to evoke what is most creative within one. Carl Binger has been sage and always helpful in his advice. All four made thoughtful criticisms of the manuscript, as did Kenneth Keniston and F. C. Redlich. Others in psychiatry and related fields to whom I am indebted are Leslie Farber, Erich Lindemann, Margaret Mead, and Beata Rank. In the perilous subtleties of Chinese cultural, intellectual, and political history, I was constantly counseled by Benjamin Schwartz and by John Fairbank, both of whom read parts of the manuscript; and earlier in the work by Lu Pao-tung, MaMeng, Howard Boorman, Conrad Brandt, and A. Doak Barnett The literary advice and loving sustenance of my wife, Betty Jean Lifton, can hardly be documented. My father, Harold A. Lifton, also did much to encourage this study. The Hong Kong research was sponsored for the first seven months
XIV THOUGHT REFORMby the Asia Foundation, and for the remaining year by the Wash- ington School of Psychiatry. The manuscript was completed under grants from the Ford Foundation and the Foundation's Fund for Research in Psychiatry, both administered through Harvard Uni- versity,Finally, I must acknowledge my debt to the forty research sub- jects, Chinese and Western, whose personal thought reform ex- periences are the basis for this study. The extent of their intelligent collaboration in this work is apparent in the biographical chapters. In these, I have altered certain details in order to protect the sub- jects' anonymity; but none of these alterations affect the essential psychological patterns.
CHAPTER 5 PSYCHOLOGICAL STEPS There is a basic similarity in what both Dr. Vincent and Father Luca experienced during Communist imprisonment. Although they were held in separate prisons far re- moved from each other, and although they differed very much in their responses to reform, they were both subjected to the same general sequence of psychological pressures. This sequence was es- sentially the same despite the fact that these men were very dif- ferent from each other, with different personal and professional life styles. Nor was this thought reform pattern common to just these two: it was experienced by all twenty-five of the Westerners whom I interviewed.
to renounce the people, the organizations, and the standards of behavior which had formed the matrix of their previous existence. They were being forced to betrayānot so much their friends and colleagues, as a vital core of themselves.
This self-betrayal was extended through the pressures to "accept help" and in turn 'lielp" others. Within the bizarre morality of the prison environment, the prisoner finds himselfāalmost without realizing itāviolating many of his most sacred personal ethics and behavioral standards. The degree of violation is expanded, very early in the game, through the mechanism of shared betrayal, as another priest described: The cell chief kept asking information about Church activities. He wanted me to denounce others, and I didn't want to do this. . . . A Chinese Father was transferred into the cell, and he said to me, "You cannot help it. You must make some denunciations. The things which the Communists know about any of your Church activities you must come out with." . . . Much later I was put in another cell to bring a French priest to confession. He had been stubborn, and had been in solitary for a few months. He was very fearful and looked like a wild animal. . . . I took care of him, washed his clothes for him, helped him to rest. I advised him that what they might know he might as well confess.
Although there is a continuing tension between holding on and letting go, some degree of self-betrayal is quickly seen as a way to survival. But the more of one's self one is led to betray, the greater is one's involvement with his captors; for by these means they make contact with whatever similar tendencies already exist within the prisoner himselfāwith the doubts, antagonisms, and ambivalences which each of us carries beneath the surface of his loyalties. This bond of betrayal between prisoner and environment may develop to the point where it seems to him to be all he has to grasp; turning back becomes ever more difficult.
thought reform differently, nor did anyone respond completely to all these steps; at the same time, the experiences had such magnitude that they affected every prisoner in some measure, no matter what his background and character.
1. THE ASSAULT UPON IDENTITY From the beginning, Dr. Vincent was told he was not really a doctor, that all of what he considered himself to be was merely a cloak under which he hid what he really was. And Father Luca was told the same thing, especially about the area which he held most preciousāhis religion. Backing up this assertion were all of the physical and emotional assaults of early imprisonment: the confusing but incriminating interrogations, the humiliating "strug- gles," the painful and constricting chains, and the more direct phys- ical brutality. Dr. Vincent and Father Luca each began to lose his bearings on who and what he was, and where he stood in relation- ship to his fellows. Each felt his sense of self become amorphous and impotent and fall more and more under the control of its would-be remolders. Each was at one point willing to say (and to be) whatever his captors demanded.
Each was reduced to something not fully human and yet not quite animal, no longer the adult and yet not quite the child; instead, an adult human was placed in the position of an infant or a sub-human animal, helplessly being manipulated by larger and stronger "adults" or "trainers." Placed in this regressive stance, each felt himself deprived of the power, mastery, and selfhood of adult existence. In both, an intense struggle began between the adult man and the child-animal which had been created, a struggle against regres- sion and dehumanization. But each attempt on the part of the prisoner to reassert his adult human identity and to express his own will ("I am not a spy. I am a doctor"; or "This must be a mistake. I am a priest, I am telling the truth") was considered a show of re- sistance and of "insincerity," and called forth new assaults.
2. THE ESTABLISHMENT OF GUILT Dr. Vincent and Father Luca found themselves unanimouslycondemned by an "infallible" environment. The message of guilt which they received was both existential (you are guilty!) and psy- chologically demanding (you must learn to feel guilty!). As this individual guilt potential was tapped, both men had no choice but to experienceāfirst unconsciously and then consciouslyāa sense of evil. Both became so permeated by the atmosphere of guilt that external criminal accusations became merged with subjective feelings of sinfulnessāof having done wrong. Feelings of resent- ment, which in such a situation could have been a source of strength, were shortlived; they gave way to the gradual feeling that the punish- ment was deserved, that more was to be expected. In making their early false confessions, Dr. Vincent and Father Luca were beginning to accept the guilty role of the criminal. Gradually, a voice within them was made to say, ever more loudly: "It is my sinfulness, and not their injustice, which causes me to sufferāalthough I do not yet know the full measure of my guilt." At this point their guilt was still diffuse, a vague and yet per- vasive set of feelings which we may call a free-floating sense of guilt.4 Another prisoner expressed this clearly: What they tried to impress on you is a complex of guilt. The complex I had was that I was guilty. . . . I was a criminalāthat was my feel- ing, day and night.
3 . THE SELF-BETRYAL The series of denunciations of friends and colleagues which both Dr. Vincent and Father Luca were required to make had special significance. Not only did making these accusations increase their feelings of guilt and shame, it put them in the position of subvert- ing the structures of their own lives. They were, in effect, being made
The common pattern becomes especially important in evaluating the stories these Westerners told me. Each was attempting to describe, in most instances as accurately as possible, the details of an ordeal from which he had just emerged. But what each reported was also inevitably influenced by his immediate life situationāhis psychological transition between the two worlds, his personal struggles for both integrity and integration, his feelings about suc- coring and threatening colleagues and strangers in Hong Kong, his view of me as an American, a physician, a psychiatrist, and a person. All of these circumstances could affect his account, and especially its emotional tone. Therefore, both during the inter- views and in the later study of my notes, I had to sift out what was
Not every prisoner was treated as severely as were Dr. Vincent and Father Luca, but each experienced similar external assaults leading to some form of inner surrenderāa surrender of personal autonomy. This assault upon autonomy and identity even extended to the level of consciousness, so that men began to exist on a level

2023.05.29 04:59 Odd_Sail_909 Constant verbal communication used as a form of psychological torture
"Constant verbal communication can be used as a form of psychological torture. This method involves subjecting an individual to repetitive or continuous auditory messages, often with the intention of breaking their will, inducing stress, or manipulating their thoughts and emotions. Here are some examples of how it can be employed:
Verbal abuse: Repeated insulting or demeaning messages can erode a person's self-esteem, create feelings of worthlessness, and induce psychological distress.
Threats and intimidation: Continuous messages conveying threats or intimidating statements can induce fear, anxiety, and a sense of imminent danger. The goal is to instill a state of constant fear and psychological torment.
Manipulation and brainwashing: By repetitive messages that promote certain beliefs, ideologies, or narratives, individuals can be subjected to psychological manipulation and attempts to alter their thoughts, opinions, or loyalties.
Sleep deprivation: Consistently playing messages to prevent sleep or disturb sleep patterns can lead to exhaustion, cognitive impairment, and heightened vulnerability to psychological manipulation.
Isolation and sensory overload: Isolating an individual and subjecting them to a constant barrage of messages can overwhelm their senses, disrupt their ability to think clearly, and induce a state of psychological confusion and disorientation.
The use of constant communication as a method of torture is both unethical and inhumane. It violates basic human rights, including the right to be free from torture, cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment."

2023.05.29 04:31 MasterDefibrillator Chomsky on Brazil (various Excerpts).
Chapter 2: The Empire Or look at Brazil: potentially an extremely rich country with tremendous resources, except it had the curse of being part of the Western system of subordination. So in northeast Brazil, for example, which is a rather fertile area with plenty of rich land, just itās all owned by plantations, Brazilian medical researchers now identify the population as a new species with about 40 percent the brain size of human beings, a result of generations of profound malnutrition and neglectāand this may be un-remediable except after generations, because of the lingering effects of malnutrition on oneās offspring.54 Alright, thatās a good example of the legacy of our commitments, and the same kind of pattern runs throughout the former Western colonies.
...
Chapter 5: Soviet Versus Western Economic Development: Whatever you think of the Soviet economic system, did it work or did it fail? Well, in a culture with deeply totalitarian strains, like ours, we always ask an idiotic question about that: we ask, how does Russia compare economically with Western Europe, or with the United States? And the answer is, it looks pretty bad. But an eight-year-old would know the problem with that question: these economies havenāt been alike for six hundred yearsāyouād have to go back to the pre-Columbian period before East and West Europe were anything more or less alike economically....
Now, suppose we asked a rational question, instead of asking an insane question like āhow did the Soviet Union compare with Western Europe?ā If you want to evaluate alternative modes of economic developmentāwhether you like them or notāwhat you ought to ask is, how did societies that were like the Soviet Union in 1910 compare with it in 1990? Well, history doesnāt offer precise analogs, but there are good choices. So we could compare Russia and Brazil, say, or Bulgaria and Guatemalaāthose are reasonable comparisons. Brazil, for example, ought to be a super-rich country: it has unbelievable natural resources, it has no enemies, it hasnāt been practically destroyed three times by invasions in this century [i.e. the Soviet Union suffered massive losses in both World Wars and the 1918 Western intervention in its Civil War]. In fact, itās a lot better equipped to develop than the Soviet Union ever was. Okay, just compare Brazil and Russiaāthatās a sane comparison.
Well, thereās a good reason why nobody undertakes it, and we only make idiotic comparisonsābecause if you compare Brazil and Russia, or Guatemala and Hungary, you get the wrong answer. Brazil, for maybe 5 or 10 percent of its population, is indeed like Western Europeāand for around 80 percent of its population, itās kind of like Central Africa. In fact, for probably 80 percent of the Brazilian population, Soviet Russia would have looked like heaven. If a Guatemalan peasant suddenly landed in Bulgaria, heād probably think heād gone to paradise or something. So therefore we donāt make those comparisons, we only make crazy comparisons, which anybody who thinks for a second would see are preposterous. And everybody here does make them: all the academics make them, all the development economists make them, the newspaper commentators make them. But just think for a second: if you want to know how successful the Soviet economic system was, compare Russia in 1990 with someplace that was like it in 1910. Is that such a brilliant insight?
...
Chapter 10: Building international Unions: In fact, itās gotten to the point where some major corporations donāt even worry about strikes anymore, they see them as an opportunity to destroy unions. For instance, the Caterpillar corporation recently broke an eighteen-month strike in Decatur, Illinois [from June 1994 to December 1995], and part of the way they did it was by developing excess production capacity in foreign countries. See, major corporations have a ton of capital now, and one of the things theyāve been able to do with it is to build up extra overseas production capacity. So Caterpillar has been building plants in Brazilāwhere they get far cheaper labor than in the United Statesāand then they can use that production capability to fill their international orders in the event of a strike in the U.S. So they didnāt really mind the strike in Decatur, because it gave them an opportunity to finally break the union through this international strategy.72 Thatās something thatās relatively new, and given this increasing centralization of power in the international economy, and the ability of big transnational corporations to play one national workforce against another to drive down work standards everywhere, there just has to be international solidarity today if thereās going to be any hopeāand that means real international solidarity.
...
Chapter 8: "Free Trade" Agreements: Well, okay, these are complicated matters, and you donāt just want to sloganize about themābut in my opinion, all of these international agreements are part of a general attack on democracy and free markets that weāre seeing in the contemporary period, as banks, investment firms, and transnational corporations develop new methods to extend their power free from public scrutiny. And in that context, itās not very surprising that theyāre all being rammed through as quickly and secretly as they are. And whatever you happen to think about the specific treaties that have now been put into place, there is just no doubt that their consequences for most of the people in the world are going to be vast.
In fact, these treaties are just one more step in the process thatās been accelerating in recent years of differentiating the two main class interests of the world still furtherāfar more so than beforeāso that the Third World wealth-distribution model is being extended everywhere. And while the proportions of wealth in a rich country like the United States will always differ significantly from the proportions in a deeply impoverished country like Brazil, for example (deeply impoverished thanks to the fact that itās been under the Western heel for centuries), you can certainly see the effects under way in recent years. I mean, in the United States things probably arenāt going to get to the point where 80 percent of the population is living like Central Africa and 10 percent is fabulously wealthy. Maybe itāll be 50 percent and 30 percent or something like that, with the rest somewhere in betweenābecause more people are always going to be needed in the Western societies for things like scientific research and skilled labor, providing propaganda services, being managers, things like that. But the changes no doubt are happening, and they will be rapidly accelerated as these accords are implemented.
Chapter 5: The Organ Trade: WOMAN: You mentioned āsocial cleansingā and people in the Third World selling their body parts for money. I donāt know if you saw the recent Barbara Walters program . . .
The answer is, āNo by definition.ā
WOMAN: Well, I have to admit I watched it. She had a segment on some American women who were attacked by villagers in Guatemala and put in jail for allegedly stealing babies for the organ trade. The gist of the story was that the Guatemalan people are totally out of their minds for supposing that babies are being taken out of the country and used for black market sale of organs. 22 What Iād like to know is, do you know of any evidence that this black market trade in childrenās organs does in fact exist, and do you think the U.S. might be playing a role in it?
Well, look: suppose you started a rumor in Boston that children from the Boston suburbs are being kidnapped by Guatemalans and taken to Guatemala so their bodies could be used for organ transplants. How far off the ground do you think that rumor would get?
WOMAN: Not far.
Okay, but in Guatemalan peasant societies it does get off the ground. Do they have different genes than we do?
WOMAN: No.
Alright, so thereās got to be some reason why the story spreads there and it wouldnāt spread here. And the reason is very clear. Though the specific stories are doubtless false in this case, thereās a background which is trueāthatās why nobody would believe it here, and they do believe it there: because they know about other things that go on.
For one thing, in Latin America there is plenty of kidnapping of children. Now, what the children are used for, you can argue. Some of them are kidnapped for adoption, some of them are used for prostitutionāand that goes on throughout the U.S. domains. I mean, you take a look at the U.S. domainsāThailand, Brazil, practically everywhere you goāthere are young children being kidnapped for sex-slavery, or just plain slavery.23 So kidnapping of children unquestionably takes place. And there is strong evidenceāI donāt think anybody doubts it very muchāthat people in these regions are killed for organ transplants.24 Now, whether itās children or not, I donāt know. But if you take a look at the recent Amnesty International report on Colombia, for example, they say almost casuallyājust because itās so routineāthat in Colombia they carry out whatās called āsocial cleansingā: the army and the paramilitary forces go through the cities and pick up āundesirables,ā like homeless people, or homosexuals, or prostitutes, or drug addicts, anybody they donāt like, and they just take them and murder them, then chop them up and mutilate their bodies for organ transplants. Thatās called āsocial cleansing,ā and everybody thinks itās a great idea. 25 And again, this goes on throughout the U.S. domains.
In fact, itās even beginning now in Eastern Europe as theyāre being turned back into another sector of the Third Worldāpeople are starting to sell organs to survive, like you sell a cornea or a kidney or something.26
WOMAN: Your own?
Yeah, your own. You just sell it because youāre totally desperateāso you sell your eyes, or your kidney, something that can be taken out without killing you. That goes on, and itās been going on for a long time. Well, you know, thatās a background, and against that background these stories, which have been rampant, are believableāand they are in fact believed. And itās not just by peasants in the highlands: the chief official in the Salvadoran government in charge of children [Victoria de Aviles], the āProcurator for the Defense of Children,ā sheās called, recently stated that children in El Salvador are being kidnapped for adoption, crime, and organ transplants. Well, I donāt know if thatās true or not, but itās not an authority you just dismiss. In Brazil too thereās been a lot of testimony about these things from very respectable sources: church sources, medical investigators, legal sources, and others.27
Now, itās interesting: I didnāt see the Barbara Walters program you mentioned, but Iāve read the State Department reports on which she probably based her stuffāand theyāre very selective in their coverage. They say, āOh, itās all nonsense and lies, and it was all started by the Communists,ā and they trace it back to sort of Communist sourcesāwhich doubtless picked it up, but they are not the sources. The State Department carefully excluded all the other sources, like the church sources, the government sources, the mainstream legal investigators, the human rights groupsāthey didnāt mention them, they just said, āYeah, the stories were picked up by the Russian propaganda apparatus back in the bad old days.ā But thatās not where it comes from. Like I say, the Russians couldnāt start these stories in the Boston suburbsāand thereās a reason why they couldnāt start them in the Boston suburbs and somebody could start them in Guatemala. And the reason is, thereās a background in Guatemala against which these things are not implausibleāwhich is not to say these women are being correctly charged; undoubtedly theyāre not, these women are just women who happened to be in Guatemala. But the point is, that background makes it easy for people there to be frightened, and in that sort of context itās quite understandable how these attacks can have happened.

2023.05.29 04:11 Perma_SSBM An old post I wrote
Even if only for a minute, greet your soul. Greet your being. What makes you, you. Feel the pains. The aches. The bruises that keep coming back.
They're familiar and yet so distant. Learn of their existence. Understand the pain, the struggle, the joy, the triumph, that makes you, who you are.
For what is to fear is what we may not comprehend, to release ourselves. To give unconditional love, to yourself. To carry the burden of awareness and understand the effort the body puts forth, so that we may learn how to help it. How we may make our own lives, more simplistic.
What happens, when unconditional love and acceptance of self is allowed to be set free of physicality? When our mind works every day for the sake of our body, our mind may one day learn to accept it's vessel as it is. To accept the body, to balance the mind. A calming and gentle equilibrium radiates in the iridescent glow of a vast field of entropy.
I don't usually share much of what's on my mind, but I think I should more.
I'm scared of what people think of me as I long for social acceptance of my perceptions. I always have been, even since I was a small child. Observant, calculating, integrating. I was reading patterns and trends. I gained fixations, propensities for cognition, bias in my perception of reality, etc. Everyone else did too, but maybe I was just too aware? To self absorbed? Too afraid to be perceived in a way that displeased my own sense of self. A fragility. An inexplicable weakness causing a tendency for self destruction.
A safety switch, cemented firmly into reality. Vices. Compulsions of various function and pathology. Each serving an individual purpose. What is it? What is the purpose of that which ails you most? What is it that means so much. Why, is it?
May you learn to let it go of its control. To be able to trust that your mind accounts for the needs of your body.

2023.05.29 04:03 VampArcher I am a GNC trans person and I hate the modern non-binary movement
Title.
I transitioned into a male, 3 years T and had top surgery. I'm a masculine male most of the time and pass as cis, but I do enjoy crossdressing sometimes as a fun art form. I am both masculine and feminine, both expressions feel like part of who I am. Strangers read me as an feminine gay male and I love that.
Now that my body(sans genitials) is pretty obviously male, I find it freeing to wear things I never could before, and it's fun imo. I love women's button ups, they have nice patterns(fruits, stripes, flowers, etc.) and they look really nice on male chests, I like to layer them over men's tank tops, it looks awesome imo. Men's clothes are often really generic and bland looking, which is fine but I need at least some color in my wardrobe. I wear light makeup sometimes(mainly eyeliner) and paint my nails, I was self-conscious at first but I get compliments on it a lot. Same with wearing graphic tees for "girly" shows, I just get seen as a man who likes feminine things so I quit overthinking.
I cross-dress as a woman sometimes just for fun, it doesn't cause dysphoria anymore because my body is so far removed from looking female.
You might think I'm non-binary. Nope. Therapists even try to tell me I'm non-binary, encouraging me to be NB.
I really hate the non-binary movement.
I feel like being GNC just isn't allowed anymore, you have to non-binary. Sex isn't even part of the conversation because 'gatekeeping', so now you gender is defined by really dumb attributes like 'do you like skirts', 'do you like the smell of lillies or pine trees', 'do you enjoy this hobby, it's really stupid! IDK how many women I've met who have identified as NB because of stuff like 'I like the color black over pink', it's ridiculous. Non-binary has killed the term GNC and replaced it, now making not liking arbitrary gender roles mean you are trans. Which is pretty dangerous, being trans is about sex characteristics. Subs like FTM scare me, so many young people on there clearly are fine with being female but do T for cosmetic reasons and do NOT want to be male, I feel like I am in crazy town.
I don't want to dismiss all NB people, but it seems like nearly all of them either don't have dysphoria, or are confusing NB with being GNC.
I was considering detransition because I thought like feminine things meant I couldn't be male. But when I actually tried being female again, it was short-lived, I couldn't stand it. The thought of having no facial hair, having a female voice, being socialized as female, and using my female organs made me want to kms, just like before I passed as male.
I found a gender therapist who wasn't a tucute, who drilled me about how I feel about my current sex characteristics, my dysphoria, and asked difficult questions, which it became very quickly apparent my brain was male and my confusion was all social. I had to sift through all these tucutes telling me it's okay to be "transmasc" to find anyone who had any idea what they were talking about and I know my experience is very common. Sex is so critical to talk about when discussing being trans, but people won't do it! Until sex comes back into the conversation, cis people will continue experiencing gender confusion as being trans is so broad and detransition. This is why I call myself transmed.

2023.05.29 03:47 DeathReaper130 Dallas Wings Game #3 Analysis
In this post as the title states, I'll be recapping and giving my analysis on what I noticed with the Dallas Wing's 3rd game today which was against the Chicago Sky.
Part #1 - Offense:
Arike Ogunbowale: Arike single handedly lost the came for the Wings today. If we take a look at her stats, she scored 27 points which was a team high, got 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. However, these stats greatly inflate her performance on the court today. Arike scored 27 points on 25 shot attempts, went 9 - 25 (36%) from the field, and 4 - 12 (33.33%) from beyond the arc. This was a very inefficient performance from the Wings' leading scorer. I know Arike has never really been known to be an efficient shooter and that she's known for being a volume shooter but this game was just another level of inefficient. She was taking the worst shot opportunities starting from the get go in the 1st quarter, which was a foreshadowing of things to come. Pretty much every time that she got the ball, Arike was chucking it up. It didn't matter to her whether there were 3 defenders in the paint waiting for her to come in or whether there was a defender draped over her while taking a jumper. Don't get me wrong, Arike is a fantastic offensive player but her inefficiency and unwillingness to take better looking shots is what's dragging her down as well as her team and it was very evident from this game. There were multiple shots which she took this game were I honestly if I was the head coach, I would have pulled her from the game. One example off the top of my head was about mid to late 4th quarter when the Sky were only up by around 5 to 7 points. Arike brings the ball up the court, gets a screen from Sabally and while the defenders switch and are still near Arike, she ends up taking a one legged contested three and missing everything but backboard. There were many other examples such as rushing transition shots just to get to shot of and taking heavily contested jumpers. I've mentioned before in some of my previous Wings' game analysis posts that Arike just seems to have a constant itch to shoot the ball. Furthermore when she either misses or doesn't get the opportunity to shoot the ball, she gets very upset, which brings me to my next point about her mental game. Arike's mental game is weak. If things aren't going her way or her shots aren't falling, she fails to ever stop and think why that's so. Instead, she'd rather continue taking bad looking shots, which leads to her getting mad at herself and the cycle starts all over again. Honestly, I'm fine with Arike taking 20 - 30 shots per game if she wants to since I know her offensive capabilities. My only thing I wished she'd do if she's taking that many shots per game is to take good looking shots and not force shots just because she can. Furthermore, I wished she also realized when enough is enough. If her shots aren't falling, either stop taking shots for a little, recompose, and shoot again or pass to your teammates. Compared to last game, Arike was a downgrade for the Wings and you'd only know by watching the game since, as mentioned before, her box stats inflate how good she may have looked this game. Overall, she was the primary reason the Wings lost today and I just hope down the stretch that she wakes up and uses her team to its full potential than thinking that she's the only person on the team and that she should do it all by herself.
Satou Sabally: Sabally was most definitely the MVP of the Wings today. She had the best game overall in terms of both offense and defense. She ended the game with 24 points on 9-16 shooting (56.25%) and had 8 rebounds. Unlike Arike, Sabally has a great well-rounded offense. She can take the three when necessary and hit the mid rangers jumpers efficiently. Furthermore, she is great in taking the ball into the paint and getting an easy bucket with her footwork and size. On the defensive end, Sabally also did quite nice. While she didn't really have the stats to back it up, she always provided great pressure against whoever she was defending and secured the defensive rebounds for the team when Natasha Howard was occupied. The offense should run through Sabally more often as she has great IQ in terms of what to do with the ball when it gets in her hands.
Natasha Howard: Howard did decent this game, ending with 14 points on 6-16 (37.5%). Her efficiency, like Arike, wasn't the best but atleast her shot quality was much better than that of Arike's. Furthermore as I've mentioned in my previous 2 Wings' game analysis posts, Howard is being limited in her production as she is using her energy to play high energy roles both on the offense and defense. In a general WNBA, most shots come from within the paint. Therefore for Howard, she's in charge of both guarding the paint and preventing shots from making in that range as well as offensively taking shots in the paint to score. She doesn't really have much other help defensive wise in the paint asides from Sabally sometimes so Howard gets tired easily as she's constantly playing high-level offense and high-level defense. Teaira McCowan still being out is a big blow to the Wings but most importantly to Howard as she is the sole person being relied to do work in the paint for both offense and defense. I definitely think once McCowan comes back that Howard's offense will take a rise as she doesn't have to put that much energy and focus on the defense as McCowans can help her out then. The only issue is however that McCowans hasn't played in the past two games and is expected to miss the month of June to play overseas. If that still pans out, then Howard is going to be in for a very rough month.
Rest Of The Team: I thought the rest of the team offensively did just ok. Dangerfield stepped up this game as well and provided 11 points on 4-8 (50%) from the field. Besides her and the starters however, nobody else scored more than a few buckets here and there. Burton did poor today offensively going 0-5 (0%) from the field and having only 2 points, both of which were from free throws. Then again to be fair, the bench really didn't play many meaningful minutes and Arike was chucking shots so there wasn't really many opportunities to shoot for everyone else. The one thing that I did like was that Maddy Siegriest got a little more playing time today. She score 6 points on 2-2 (100%) from beyond the arc in only 7 minutes. She's definitely a dangerous scorer when she gets the minutes so I'm curious to be seeing how that goes on throughout the season. I thought Siegrist should have been the #1 overall pick in this year's rookie draft going into the draft so I do think the Wings got a steal with her at #3. As she gets more minutes and develops more, I could definitely see her becoming a reliable scoring option off the bench for the Wings.
Part #2 - Defense:
Natasha Howard: Once again, I thought Howard did decent on defense. She was getting outplayed a bit against Elizabeth Williams as she was able to use her height and size to her advantage against Howard in the paint. Howard ended up with 2 blocks and 1 steal in the game. As mentioned previously however, we won't be able to see the full capabilities of Natasha Howard until Teaira McCowans is back in the starting lineup. Howard has to conserve her energy as she's expected to play a primary role in both the team's offense and defense with very little help on the defensive end in the paint with McCowans not there. Especially in this game, Howard looked very tired and the Sky were able to capitalize on this in the second half as they pounded away in the paint on the offense.
Rest Of The Team: I thought the team did alright once again. The Wings' defense was able to lock up Courtney Williams for most of the game which was good. Furthermore, I loved how the defense kept moving around and switching on plays. There were moments in the game where the Wings got help defense in the paint and left an open person for the Sky. As the ball moved around to that open person, the Wings' players all shifted over to the open player until the defense was set up back to normal again. This was a good sign because it felt that the team was playing defense together rather than individual players playing defense at times. Furthermore after allowing Mabrey to go off from beyond the arc in the first quarter, the Wings' perimeter defense tightened up very nice in the second half which is a good sign as well. Help for Howard in the paint is the main issue for the Wings defense so hopefully someone can step up in that regard.
Dallas Wing's Defensive Shot Breakdown: I've mentioned this in a couple of posts but I've noticed a pattern in the WNBA which I call the 50-30-20 rule. Essentially, this means that 50% of all shots taken and points scored by a team are in the paint, 30% of all shots taken and points scored by a team are in the mid-range, and 20% of all shots taken and points scored by a team are from behind the arc. Therefore, I'll be listing how the Dallas Wings' defense affected from where the Storm were forced to take their shots and score their points from just like in my previous game analysis.
Paint: 20 - 39 - 52% of all shots taken and 54.05% of all points scored (not with free throws)
Mid Range: 8 - 17 - 22.66% of all shots taken and 21.62% of all points scored (not with free throws)
3 Point: 6 - 19 - 25.33% of all shots taken and 24.32% of all points scored (not with free throws)
By looking at these breakdowns, we can see tat the Wings' defense wasn't all that great. They managed to allow the Sky to reach the 50-30-20 goals for nearly all the zones, especially the paint zone. There was a slight difference in the mid range and beyond the arc as the Wings forced the Sky to take a little more shots from beyond the arc than mid range shots. However, that's wasn't really that big of a difference. Allowing 52% of all shots taken and 54.05% of all points scored (aside from free throws) in the paint was the biggest downside of the Wings' defense, even if it was a small percent change. Whenever these percents go higher than 50% for the area inside the zone, the defense has for the most part lost. Paint defense is always the most important defensive zone to be taken care of. In this game however, the Sky were able to do better and take advantage of the Wings defense in the paint, leading to the win for them.
Final Recap: Overall, the Wings played just average today. I know there's a lot more potential for this team and it just depends on whether they can make the necessary adjustments and changes. The Sky was also the first "good team" I'd say that the Wings played so far this season so this was a good indication to see how the future games look for the Wings as a whole. The most important takeaways from this game in my opinion are that Arike needs to be much smarter when the ball is in her hands and the Wings need to figure out some help for Howard on the defensive end while Teaira McCowan is injured. The Wings didn't get blown out this game and only lost by 6 points, which is two possessions. Maybe if a couple of Arike's chucked shots were thought through better, the outcome could have been different but we'll never know. After today's loss to the Sky, the Wings are now 2-1 in the season. They play the Minnesota Lynx in two days so hopefully changes can be made accordingly.
